Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been using Pinter since version 4 and have upgraded 4 or 5 times. Painter 11 was my last version.
I decided to get version 12 because up the multi thread support and wanted to see the new interface.

I could not get past the serial # when attempting to install the program. I emailed Corel and was told that this was not a valid serial #, it was like a not for sale version from a trade show.
After providing proof of purchase, I was provided a new serial # that let me install the program but it would not run.
After several attempts of rebooting, removing re-installing etc I contacted them again.
They suggested looking at the compatibility settings.I tried them all and nothing worked.
I did try it on a lap top with Windows XP and could run it, but not on Windows 7. I see the shortcut, but when I launch it nothing happens. It does look like a better interface, but I can not run it on the PC I want it for.

Like others posting here, the serial number that shipped with my education version did not work. I contacted Corel and they emailed me a new serial number. After I received that the installation went smoothly and Painter 12 works on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. It hasn't crashed, yet but it does take longer to load than Painter 11.

They have changed several things in Painter 12 so it will take a while to get used to the new interface. I've had to run several searches to find out simple thing like:

1. How to add a brush to a custom palette? In Painter 11, you clicked and dragged. In Painter 12, you have to hold down the shift key while you click and drag! You won't believe how long it took me to find that out!

2. How to turn the tracing paper off and on? In Painter 11 there was a button near the upper right corner of the image. Now the toggle is on the new navigation menu but you have to first click on the settings button located near the bottom left corner of the navigation window. (Update 9/1/2011: A recent Painter 12 update put the tracing paper option in the Clone Source window. Thank you, Corel!)

3. How to I set the clone image source? It's not in the dropbox menu anymore--it has a window all to itself.

While it is tempting to go back to Painter 11, I will stick with Painter 12 because I use this software in a course I teach and it is important that I keep up to date.

I do believe that in the long run I will like the new interface. It reminds me a lot of Photoshop. I like the new navigation window--but who would have thought the tracing paper function would be hidden in a setting there? The brush controls have also been improved. The brushes are a lot faster (at least on my machine), and that in itself makes it worth upgrading.

Overall, I'm happy!

The edition on display here is Corel Painter 12 Education Edition. It is not for commercial use. This is what the label says, at the upmost right. So I am surprised that it is on sale here.

Anyway, Corel Painter 12, as such, is a marvelous software with immensely realistic effects of oil colours, water colours, etc. It is immensely pleasurable only to play around with, creating abstract paintings. It can also paint automatically from photos. Minimum RAM is 1Gb, but you really need more than that in order to use "Real Water colour" and "Real Oil colours". A pressure sensitive tablet is a must.
