Pros: when it works, the result is good

Cons: more often than not, it does not work

I bought the product online directly from Corel. I have to say that the few DVDs I tried played OK. When I tried to ply Blu Rays, the experience was different. A lot of bd stop working with the "Media Not Supported" message. I have 2 other bluray players (Samsung and OPPO) and they are both able to play those disks. When the software is able to move further along, it is doing really strange things with the screen resolution, although it usually is able to play, but often with a perceptible time lag between video and sound. I contacted the Corel support who only contacted me through email and after 2 rounds of "re-install directx, re-install / upgrade your video drivers" then "re-install the entire product", I just decided to forget about my HTPC, the $60 I spent and go back to my OPPO player to watch my movies without wasting my time.

Corel is rapidly becoming the Netscape of the digital media software world. I have reviewed two of their products on Amazon, Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 which I gave 1 star to, and Corel Digital Studio 2010 which I gave 2 stars to.

So, what's new with Corel? Not much, really. I actually kind of feel sorry for them. They have a portfolio of products that are becoming increasingly irrelevant in modern computing. Image editing can now be done "in the cloud" (that's "online" for those of you not infected with marketing-speak) from companies like Adobe, Microsoft, and even Tumblr and Facebook -- and generally for free for the red-eye and cropping tools that the majority of people only want. Well, OK, but what about watching DVDs and Blu-Rays? Well, Apple computers come with software to do that right in the OS, same goes for Windows 7+ computers (with plug-ins for DVD, they don't do Blu-Ray yet, but I am sure they will soon). Sure, they aren't packed full of features, but then again, neither is a DVD/Blu-Ray player. If the OS doesn't provide a program to watch movie discs on, there are always free programs like VideoLAN's VLC player (which plays darn near everything). Apple's Quicktime Player Pro will also play discs (although you have to pay for it).

So, what is a company like Corel supposed to do? The answer it seems, in their case, add bloatware to all of their products, and try to convince their customers that using their software is the ONLY way to do certain things.

To put it simply, this product just does not work. I installed the software, installed the latest updates, and when i try to play a Blu-Ray or a DVD it freezes. I uninstalled it, then re-installed it again, and the same issue happens. All of my drivers are up-to-date. So i tried contacting Corel. Their tech support is a joke, as the website doesn't even allow you to actually send a question to tech support. You can fill out a case for them to answer your question, but after you send it it says "Case Creation Fail" and your question disappears. I tried this on 2 separate days, and the same thing happens. No support on Corel's user forum either, as it is mostly comprised of people asking my same question: Why doesn't it work?

I bought WinDVD Pro 11 because i have Cyberlink's PowerDVD on another computer and have had issues with it. Looks like i'm going back to PowerDVD. Unfortunately

I have kept an eye on WinDVD for years and was sorry to see that its quality was declining. Then Corel bought it and I felt very excited about the possibility of a true software giant supporting its development.

Unfortunately, v2010 was flawed - I downloaded trials on several occasions and was disappointed every time. It was full of bugs! I could not believe Corel would allow such software under its banner.

Quire simply put WinDVD has given PowerDVD too much breathing space and Cyberlink has used its No 1 position in a monopolized market to further complicate and bloat PowerDVD, which after v7 has not added a single must-have function. (3D! Is that what customers really want - and not Unicode subtitle support, for example?) They needed badly a worthy competitor... and they have finally found one in WinDVD v11!

1. A generous trial period of 30 days.
2. The installation package is somewhat big - 118 MB (though actually smaller than PowerDVD), but installation is comparatively quick and painless. On screen data keeps you informed about the installation progress.
3. The player acts as a lightweight one, there is no lag. Startup time is also great. PowerDVD trails behind here.
4. Controls are easy to understand and use. The only recommendation would be to have "Options" and "Audio/Video Controls" at the same place. Why have two separate configuration paths?
5. When playing DVDs and BDs there is a lot of tweaking available with regards to audio and video options. Not as many as PowerDVD has, though.
6. Volume can be controlled with the mouse wheel. It is surprising that many high-profile players can not do this simple trick - and it is essential. When you turn the wheel (scroll) in PowerDVD that would...
