Excellent value, holds up well,

I bought this set, actually two of them, about 6 years ago when I got my first apartment and I've got to review this set very highly because: 1. they're extremely durable 2. they're so easy to care for 3. they look great and 4. its a great overall value package.Durability: I bought 2 sets, so that's 8 settings and it came with small coffee cups, dinner plates, bread plates, cereal/soup bowls, a serving plate, and serving bowls. I have gotten a helluva lot of use out of them. I've used these dishes for more than eating, including plant water bowls. I've dropped a number of them on the floor and found not a crack or scratch. Only warning, don't leave them in your sink on top of cookie sheets, they'll get a rust stain, so make sure your boyfriend isn't too lazy to put them in the dishwasher. I microwave these suckers all the time and they've never broken. Only a couple of the bowls have broken because they got stuck together or I opened the dishwasher when it was still hot. Still, excellent lifespan. Ease of care: Yeah, all you have to do is get these dishes into the dishwasher and you're set. Again, the only discoloration was from leaving them in contact with poor quality cookie sheets which rusted on them a little bit, but given how long I've had these, it doesn't bother me much. They stack up very nicely and don't take up a whole lot of space. Looks & Use: All the pieces fit together well and look nice when dressed up with food. I bought frost white because food looks better on white, and then I can put down different colored table cloths or place mats and change it up whenever I want. The coffee cups are nice, but since I don't drink coffee, I just use them for sip cups or sometimes cooking. I use the large plates and the small bowls ALL the time. Bowls are perfect for cereal, soup, dry snacks, beating eggs for an omelette, or anything. They're just the right size for a serving, especially a pack of ramen noodles. Value: So you've read how much and what I've used these for, you can see what a great value this is. It's an ideal set for people just getting started on their own, college students, young couples, etc (and keep in mind, the children will have to TRY to break these things, I've seen kids drop my plates and not have them break). They're inexpensive to replace if something does break. The lifespan with typical use is at least 6 years. Even now my stuff looks good, despite the stains (which are on the bottom, and not due to manufacturing defect) and I plan to keep using them until I decide to get something that runs about $10-15 a plate (read, higher paying job). But even if I had kids, I'd have them use these dishes because I'm not going get upset if something happens to it. Overall value: excellent. You get a lot of pieces for a great price and they'll last you a long time!

Why Is This Stuff Two-Tone When It's Called Just White?,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Corelle Livingware Just White 34-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I love Corelle. Always have. Clean, pretty, lightweight. People would be using it for formal dinnerware if, from the start, the manufacturer had just come up with some fancy patterns and set the price eight times higher.
And I really like the Just White set I bought recently. But... The mugs, which are of a very pleasant and usable shape, are made of stoneware, not of Corelle glass. This would not be a problem, except that the color of the mugs simply doesn't match that of the other pieces. The picture shown on Amazon is accurate--in it you can see that the mugs have a strong grayish cast. I noticed this when I was ordering the set from Amazon, but I thought maybe it was just the picture's lighting. After all, other vertical surfaces in the picture look rather gray, too. But no, folks. I regret to inform you that that gray is for real. I eat and serve a lot of Indian food, and a meal usually includes many dishes. I have been able to find pieces from other manufacturers that match the Just White Corelle very nicely. I found little earless tea cups for yogurt, little soy sauce dishes for pickles, and wee ramekins for fresh chutney. It's wonderul how nicely they all match the Just White. Which leads me to ask: If other manufacturers can match the Just White color accidentally, why couldn't Corelle do it on purpose? When I set a table with dishes from three manufacturers, the only piece that sticks out like a sore thumb is the Corelle mug. I'm not going to dump the set. The place setting still looks nice, and I'll undoubtedly be able, some day soon, to find some mugs that match the Corelle. But I'd be a lot happier if the Corelle mugs had matched.

I like these dishes so much that I gave away all my heavy stoneware. The cups are especially nice. I did not have any trouble with shipping - no breakage. I also bought the Corelle Livingware Winter Frost White 5-Piece Snack Set of bowls to go with this set. These dishes take up less cabinet space, are lightweight, durable and dishwash easily. I am truly pleased with this purchase.

A few comments about cups and mugs...,

Back in 1970, when Corelle was first introduced (and Corning Packaging still made its boxes so that breakage during shipping would have been unheard of), the introductory sets included cups and saucers. The cups were rather unique, because (1) they were actually made of Corelle, (2) they had what appeared to be half-handles, which (2a) allowed them to be stacked straight up, just like the rest of the dishes, and (3) were microwaveable. To us engineers, it appeared to be a perfect cup, albeit a little small, but customer surveys seem to tell a different story: people had problems holding the handle properly, resulting in reports of scalding, while others seemed to keep mistaking them for creamers or sugar bowls. While this seemed silly to some of us (we found that they also made cute parfait cups), marketing decided that we needed to use real, full handles.
I am not privy to all the details, but it appeared that Corelle cups just could not be made with full handles, so matching cups made of (ceramic) Centura. Though, in one sense, this was a bargain for the customer, since Centura dishware was more expensive than Corelle, it did have a definite downside, it was not microwaveable. Thus, over the years since, various options have tried, either within the introductory sets or as available options, such as imported ceramic cups and mugs, Pyrex mugs, etc, etc. And, today, some Corelle sets do not even include cups or mugs, but just tumblers (which, if they are not translucent, are NOT Corelle, so be careful...) Just thought you would like to know this bit of trivia. BTW, if anyone has any of the original stackables, particularly in Butterfly Gold, and wish to get rid of them, please notify me and we might be able to make a deal...

Kid friendly dishware,

We love these dishes! They have survived our 16 month old dropping them from the table daily. No scratches or chips. They are lightweight, but sturdy. They stack in half of the space that our old set did!

my parents got these plates for their wedding present 30 years ago before internet even came out, and now It's my turn to buy them. It went through me dropping them, abusing them, washing them as a kid, until now. It's never been broken or chipped and those are the only plates we've used for 30 years. There's just a faint hint of scratch on a couple of plates, but all the rest still look brand new! I'd say that is pretty good for 30 year old plates!

nothing fancy, but it's durable,
This review is from: Corelle Livingware Just White 34-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
My roommates and I had purchased some basic IKEA dishes (don't remember exactly which type they were) and within the first week of using them at least 3-4 of the dishes chipped from minor falls (ie, they fell into the sink, or from somebody's hands into the dishdrain). I had grown up with corelle, and knew that we had the same set of dishes for years, didn't treat them with any particular care, and yet very few had chips and seemed to only break when they were both very old and faced a major catastrophe. So, I decided to make a little investment in dishes(corelle is slightly more expensive, maybe about a half again more, but when you think of the fact that the other dishes were cracking within a week, it'll likely be worth it). One of my roommates thought they looked too flimsy to hold up, especially compared to the hefty IKEA dishes, but it's been months and still no chips in the Corelle. The same roommate that made fun of how thin the Corelle was finally agreed with me when somebody accidentally knocked one off of the table and the bowl was fine.

Exactly the everyday dishes I was looking for...,

This review is from: Corelle Livingware Just White 34-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I've owned a couple of sets of Corelle dinnerware through the years and gave both sets away because I used them so long (without breaking any pieces) that I grew tired of the pattern. This time I decided I wanted a plain white dinnerwear set for everyday use. When I did an Internet search, this Corelle set came up. I bought it, and I'm very pleased with my purchase. I highly recommend it.

I have had a problem for awhile now where I kept breaking dishes in my sink. I recently moved into an apartment that has a ceremic type material sink. [...]
Though these things aren't great with the design department, they stack well, are hard to break and/or chip, & how can you go wrong with frost white? I would have given them 5 stars, but they don't have anything *extra special* to warrant a 5th star. |
