Editorial Reviews

Tremendous new recordings of Baroque master Corelli's complete works, performed on period instruments. Corelli was a peer of and huge influence on Vivaldi, as well as the founder of modern violin technique; his work consists of six opus numbers comprising 72 works altogether. They are all written for string instruments only, mainly sonatas for orchestra or, in the case of Opus 6 , 12 concerti grossi that played a major role in establishing the form. Performed here by the Musica Amphion under the direction of harpsichordist/organist Pieter-Jan Belder.

Brilliant Classics 10 disc compendium of the complete works of Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) is a bargain. The performances are by members of Musica Amphion, a Dutch period instrument orchestra, conducted from the harpsichord by Pieter Jan Belder.

These may be lesser known musicians, but their performances are excellent, and this set is consistently good, and a wonderful bargain, at under $40.00.

This is my first recordings by these musicians, and I sampled the Opus 6 Concerti Grossi, Corelli's most recorded works. Nos. 1, 4 and 8 (Christmas Concerto) do not pale in comparison with recordings of better known ensembles: I Musici (Philips),

Pinnock/English Concert (Archiv/DG), Shepherd/Cantilena (Chandos), or Krcheck/Capella Istropolitana (Naxos). Musica Amphion may be a small orchestra: about 15 players, I'm guessing, but their sound is full and rich, and though period instruments, they are expressive, and not wimpy sounding; you will not hear the scraping and noise which accompany some period recordings.

I especially like Musica Amphion's recording of the Opus 4 Trio Sonatas: Nos. 1, 2, and 3, which hold real nostalgia for me from Max Goberman's famous CBS Odyssey recording (on modern instruments, of course), popular on LPs in the early 1970s. I find Musica Amphion's recording superior, both in playing and recorded sound, to the IL Ruggiero recording, released in 1995 by an Italian firm in a complete recording of Corelli's Opus 4 Trio Sonatas.

The price is low, performances excellent, and Brilliant's recorded sound is all one can ask for. Unless you really HATE period instruments - and these are musical, and so well played - best to grab it while you can. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful collection May 12, 2008

This is a wonderful collection of all of Corelli's chamber music. I already owned most of it, but the warmth and richness of these recordings make this group easy to listen to. This is excellent value for your money. It is a quick way to gather together all of his recordings. The performers are excellent and play in many internationally known orchestras and smaller ensembles. There are times when I wish the tempo was a little faster but these are enjoyable nonetheless. You may also want to try his violin sonatas, op5 by the Locatelli trio. The Purcell Quartet is also excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music gorgeously played October 5, 2007

This is by far the best recording of Corelli I have ever heard, especially the Concerti Grossi. Clear, rich, and sparkling, the recording quality perfectly matches the lush playing. Good price for a set of 10 CDs of this quality; my only quibble is the cheap cardboard sleeves the disks come in. But don't let this be a deterrent--buy them now and enjoy hours of terrific music. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely performed complete Corelli March 31, 2009
Verified Purchase
Corelli wrote (or published) very little music compared to many other Baroque composers but he had tremendous influence throughout early 18th century Europe. This is the first complete compilation of the published (and some unpublished) works on CD, in very nice performances using authentic instruments and tuning. In addition to the concerti and the violin sonatas all of the trio sonatas are here. Great music well performed, and some not readily available elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Compilation!! June 11, 2009
I recently became interested in Corelli's music after seeing a dance performance by Alonzo King's Lines Ballet, "Dust and Light", that utilized music by Corelli and Poulenc. I was quite impressed by the Corelli pieces. Not having any Corelli in my collection. this set seemed like a very good deal. I find the set interesting because it seems to track Corelli's development as a composer. The beginning sonatas gradually evolve into what later become concertos. Apparently, Corelli was an innovator of violin performance and repertoire. There is a definite mood and similarity to much of the music and many of the melodies sound familiar. I believe much of what is written here ended up in compositions of later Baroque composers. I recently read a bit where Corelli and his counterparts were referred to as "ice cream composers". That is slightly derogatory maybe, but the music is soothing, flowing and melodic, not demanding. It can be listened to with focus or played in the background. I find the performances to be well done, balance is even, slight edge to the strings at times in my audio system. Good soundstage. The church space acoustic and the period instruments provide a nice ambience. Great music for a sunny, Sunday morning breakfast or a night cap to unwind before sleep! Packaging is adequate, liner notes informative. Wish they had credited the artists on the individual disc sleeves. Excellent Value!

5.0 out of 5 stars Flawless January 28, 2009

I call him Corelli, the infallible, because he's never written anything I don't like. This is a great recording of one of the most consistently flawless composers of all time along with Handel. Maybe he wasn't the innovator others were, but he never seemed to write anything that wasn't tasteful, inspired and profound. I consider him one of the best because of this. There is simply Mozart, Bach and Beethoven pieces I don't particularly like. There is not Corelli I don't like. He could do no wrong as far as I am concerned. Corelli was a profound musical genius. Why he is not better known, I can't say.
