Product Description

If you are a Franco Corelli fan, you will find this DVD indispensable! The amazing six-hour production features Corelli in 1971, giving thrilling performances of arias from Rigoletto, Andrea Chénier, L Africana, La bohème, La fanciulla del West, and Le Cid. Bonuses in this collector s edition include a 32-page booklet with rare photographs and two radio interviews with Opera Fanatic Stefan Zucker, in which the tenor talks about legendary fellow performers such as Callas, Caruso, Del Monaco, Björling, and Pertile.

A 700-page book by Stefan Zucker, titled Franco Corelli and a Revolution in Singing, will be published to tie in with this release. Written in cooperation with the Metropolitan Opera Archive, the book will be distributed by the University Press of New England.

A Corelli's superb live performance. Though image is not the best, sound is quite good and Franco seems to feel comfortable singing.

I think this is possibly the same as the 1971 Tokyo Concert I reviewed under a different label elsewhere. But, this one is much less expensive! In any event, you can't go wrong buying this tape or DVD because Franco Corelli was one of "the greats" and anything he did was great! Just think how much it would cost to go to a concert these days and you'll realize this tape is priceless! (Please note: If it's the tape I have in mind please do NOT expect it to be a perfect studio type experience. It was probably taken off a TV transmission thus there'll be some video noise and the sound will not be hi-fi. But, it's worth it just the same because Mr. Corelli is deceased thus making this concert a rare opportunity to see him in his prime. Just don't complain about it, OK? "The glass is half full---not half empty"!!! :o) Email:boland7214@aol.

I saw Corelli many times, including at his very best in a Boheme a few months before this concert. I assure you that he was, unfortunately, not in prime form at this Tokyo concert. I have no idea why all these reviewers claim that he was. By 1971, Franco had his ups and downs, thought his real vocal problems didn't begin until the next year. He remained capable of pulling a rabbit out of the hat to the very end of his opera career, but I never heard truly prime form from this magnificent tenor after that April, 1971 Boheme. It is a disservice to Corelli to listen to him here, at age 50, and think this was the best he could do. Not by a long shot. Greg Stanford, The Operatic Ear, anotheramerica.org
