4.0 out of 5 stars Corinne Bailey Rae
I immediately got this disc after seeing her video featured on VH1 Soul's channel a couple of months ago. Happily I am enjoying this disc and heard that it'll be re-released stateside later this summer - hopefully more people who love Amel Larrieux, India.Arie, Adrianna Evans, etc will give this woman a chance.

What I love about singers & bands from the U.K...

What I love about singers & bands from the U.K. is that they are not afraid to be individuals and create signature sounds. So while American r&b singers all strive to sound alike, females in overseas are not only writing & producing their own songs but like Ms. Bailey playing a lot of the instruments on their records - this is a refreshing trend that I hope US artists like Alicia Keys, India. Aire, Vanessa Carlton & Fiona Apple pick up on moreso than those who jump across the stage barely clothed "dropping it like it's hot".

I liked this entire disc for the beautiful lyrics & music production and while not every song captured my heart, enough did so that I gave it a high ranking. To the poster who stated that all of the songs sound alike, I suggest you give it another listen because I heard a few heartfelt ballads, a few mid-tempo grooves and even a mildly funky groove so saying that the songs sound alike gives a wrong impression to those who haven't heard anything from this young lady yet.

The songs that I keep on repeat are: LIKE A STAR (beautifully spare), ENCHANTMENT & TILL IT HAPPENS TO YOU (beautiful love songs with exquisite lyrics); TROUBLE SLEEPING, BREATHLESS & I'D LIKE TO.

Corinne Baily Rae is a unique new voice in the neo-soul realm who hopefully will get a chance to shine in the states. I'd highly recommend this disc is you love neo-soul music.

From the momoment I saw the "Like A Star" video I had to buy this CD, even without hearing any of her other songs. I love every song on the CD, the whole thing has a nice groove to it. I like th fact that there are slow songs as well as fast upbeat songs. I absoultely love and recommend this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Just Wonderful!, June 4, 2006

First, let me just say that this is NOT a neo-soul album. Neo-soul does not exist except in agendas of music executives who aim keep certain forms of black music in a box where it's conditioned to be unmarketable.

Second, although she may sound somewhat similar, she is in no way shape or form a comparison to Erykah Badu or Bille Holiday. Corinne is her own artist within her own sound. And folks need to stop blind comparisons such as these, and allow fantastic artists like Corinne to grow wiithin thier own skin.

With that said... Corinne is truly a breath of fresh air in an atmosphere of payola and executive controlled music. There is not one song on this album that misses the mark. Corinne sings like a hopeful songbird looking to either keep a love strong or renew it. Every song had me silently saying to myself and to her, "i can give her that, and so much more". As a man, Corinne makes me want to empathize and give her the kind of love and attention she is searching for. Nowadays, within an atmostphere of bodies being showcased as a tool for sex and one night stands, not many female artists can do what Corinne has accomplished in one solitary album. Songs such as 'Call Me When You Get This', 'Breathless' and 'Enchantment', makes a man want a woman for more than what she has to offer on the outside.

My only concern with Corinne is she tends to mumble some of the words in her songs. I had to repeat a verse or two more than twice to understand what she's saying. Nevertheless, once I was clear on her message, she had me hook, line and sinker.

This is a very sweet and introspective album that can surely open your heart and minds to something new. It is a fantastic companion for taking a summer drive with your significant other.

I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Debut, June 25, 2006
This review is from: Corinne Bailey Rae (Audio CD)
Every song on this CD is spectacular. Corinne has a soulful, sultry, earthy voice set to smooth music, and laced with amorous, clever lyrics. Her sound is a blues, folk hybrid w/streaks of supple jazz. It's the perfect mix. This is summer music that you listen to near the ocean (or on your patio) with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc (or Merlot if you like Reds) and an amorous breeze.

I stumbled upon Corinne Bailey Rae while looking through the website of a music venue I occasionally go to. She had an upcoming show and I'd never heard of her before. I went to her website and bought the album just based on the portions of songs playing on her site.

She's got a very nice voice, not a powerhouse diva, but an instrument she uses quite well. I'm a big fan of interesting voices (as long as they can actually sing) and the comparisons to Billie Holiday and Erykah Badu are apt, she has a similar vocal quality, a bit tender and bit girlish, but without a doubt, strong. Musically, I'd compare her more with people like Amel Larrieux, Mica Paris and little known singers like Lina and Rebekah (check them out too; they could use a break as well). I disagree with the reviewer suggesting that this is soul music for middle class white folks; yet I do feel this album falls in the pop soul category, as many of the songs are catchy. Her music and lyrics are literate and emotive; and there is a continuity of style throughtout the album that allows it be cohesive. I think upon repeat listens, the indiviual tracks begin to stand out more. It's a good album to be released for spring/summer, because the overall feel of the album is sunny/uplifting; even the slower sadder songs.

Fans of intelligent, thoughful, youthful soul music should give her a listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Beautiful, June 6, 2006
This review is from: Corinne Bailey Rae (Audio CD)
CBR's music is unhinged from the trappings of an unintelligible musical culture. It is simple, sensitive and soulful. Don't expect Leela James, Anthony Hamilton and Hill St. Soul dimensions. But there is a depth here that is refreshing and embraceable for anyone who values music that enriches the soul. Her music will fit in with the likes of Lina, Lalah Hathaway and Olu. I have an affinity for these artists that take marketing labels and stew them. She is not easily definable. If this music came from her soul, it is thoroughly beautiful.
