Not the Best, but Very Very Good Nonetheless, January 26, 2007
This review is from: 1 Corinthians (IVP New Testament Commentary Series) (Hardcover)
I had to write an exegesis paper on a passage in 1 Cor. for a college class. I used four different commentaries, of which this was one. This commentary was very simular to two of the other three in terms of the way the material was presented and the level of detail. That said, be aware that the level of detail is not extraordinarily high. The author comments on major sections rather than on each verse and his discussions are adequate without being very deep. Keep in mind that this is the same with most other commentaries (the one by Gordon Fee being a notable exception) so really this book compares rather favorably to most others.
The most valuable section of this book was on the social background of Corinth. There was some information there regarding Corinthian society that was not to be found in the other three commentaries.
Bottom Line: Valuable resource for academic papers as well as for preaching.
