Uncharacteristic, but still good,
By A Customer
This review is from: Corne De Vache (Audio CD)
It is a little odd that, of all the albums that Anna Homler has participated in making, this is the only one that can be found on amazon.com. Homler along with Geert Waegeman and Pavel Fajt constituted a group called "Macaronic Sines" (and their album by that name is highly recommended). What makes Anna Homler noteworthy as a vocalist is that she typically sings in a language of her own invention. Based on information she's mentioned in interviews, this isn't a "serious" artificial language -- i.e. the attraction isn't trying to decipher the lyrics, but rather the opposite. The listener is expected and encouraged to forget about the meaning of the lyrics and enjoy them strictly as music. Whether or not Homler's language is internally consistent, I can't say, but it certainly has a consistent flavor, and one that is entirely musical. "Corne de Vache" is a recording of a live performance at the Victoriaville international festival of musique actuelle. The album is somewhat uncharacteristic in that there are more songs sung in English than in her own language. (And several of the English "songs" are actually just "spoken", as a recitation of free verse.) But everyone puts on a good show, and the album is worth picking up. If you're interested in Anna Homler's other albums, I highly recommend that you seek them out. In addition to the two "Macaronic Sines" albums, she has released three albums under her own name. Try searching for her in cadencebuilding.com.
