4.0 out of 5 stars Love it
If anyone is remotely interested in the music of Cornelius they must own this. His music videos are similar to the works of Michel Gondry. Unfortunately, I docked one star because of no Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Yes thats right it is called 5.1 but that is only if you have a receiver capable of DTS decoding. If you do have DTS, this is sure to please. It is just...

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I had never heard of Cornelius but I was intrigued and thought I would give this a shot. I was looking for some neat video/animation together with some interesting music. With the hopes of being pleasantly surprised I ordered my copy. I must say that I was disappointed in the music as well as most of the videos. The sound is excellent but the only decent video here, in...

Unfortunately, I docked one star because of no Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Yes thats right it is called 5.1 but that is only if you have a receiver capable of DTS decoding. If you do have DTS, this is sure to please. It is just unfortunate thaey didn't stick both DD and DTS on there, but instead took up all the space on the DVD with a "personal surround" mode for headphones. There is also a bonus disc with music from Cornelius fans, not necessary but a nice little extra. Now if only they could release a Fantasma DVD...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beneath the Planet of Cornelius, June 27, 2004

Point has been one of my favorite recordings of the last several years, and continues to stun me with its production--I frequently put on either 'Smoke' or 'Drop' and watch people's faces light up as that perfect clarity and punch kick in.

Sadly from a production standpoint the 5.1 mix isn't as adventurous as I had hoped; it's perfectly servicable, but nowhere near the state of the art mixes like those of Elliot Scheiner for Donald Fagen and Steely Dan. But still any multi-channel mix of such a fun album is bound to be a treat, and this doesn't dissapoint.

The real icing on the cake though, are the videos that accompany each song. I've grown accustomed to basic place-card art, or maybe simple animations on DVD audio discs, but this has fully explored concept videos for each song (and even two different versions for the song 'Drop'). Really a lot of fun--even my 6-year old and 2-year old twins were enthralled.

If you have a multi-channel system I highly recommend this one; and if for some reason you haven't heard the original CD it's pretty fabulous too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cornelius is not an ape!, May 7, 2004
This review is from: Cornelius - 5.1 Plus PM (Superjewel) (DVD)
Cornelius is the Brian Wilson of modern music, he's doing his own thing, to heck with what everyone else does. Cornelius' Point will be noted as a milestone album in the history of music, it drives home the point (excuse the pun) that electronic music doesn't have to be danceable, doesn't have to be predictable or simple, and frankly, doesn't have to suck. I can't stand nearly all modern electronic music for one or more of those reasons.

FIVE POINT ONE takes the Point album one step further by tightly integrating visuals to the music. The video production is not sophisticated, indeed it's charming and you could even say, it's VERY Japanese. That's not to say the visuals are not interesting. They are sublime, and several of them are right up there with the best videos by Michel Gondry or Spike Jonez. They compliment the music perfectly. The surround sound dances around you as the visuals suck you in. The Personal Surround option on this DVD is worth noting, it really DOES create a 3D listening space with headphones. But the DTS track is the way to go. BUY THIS DVD!!!!!

In the world of electronica, Cornelius is one special dude! Magical and melodic, with a wonderful visual wit and width. Gorgeous sound effects and textures galore. His video partners are so talented & crafty and match his music to eye-popping images. A pair of fingers on a casual stroll through a room, over objects, on their way to their guitar neck makes me smile with every watching ["Tone Twilight Zone"]. Thoroughly entertaining! (Also check out his follow-up CD/DVD "Sensuous")Sensuous

With the hopes of being pleasantly surprised I ordered my copy. I must say that I was disappointed in the music as well as most of the videos. The sound is excellent but the only decent video here, in my opinion, is drop. Most of the music is really corny and the last video is plain horrible. If your really interested try to rent this before you spend your money!
