Biography

One of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the 20th Century, Edward "Duke" Ellington led a band from the early 1920s until his death in 1974. He composed new material relentlessly, specifically writing to get the best out of his band members. In the late 20s his band earned a residency at Harlem's Cotton Club, which brought nationwide fame to Ellington, as their performances were… Read more in Amazon's Duke Ellington Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Very excellent Ellington, October 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cornell University: Second Set (Audio CD)
This is a title that any serious jazz collector must own. Ellington's commentary before certain songs creates a total concert experience, as you can understand Ellington as a performer, not just a musician. The music is terrific, and the solos, as always, are virtuoso. Buy the first set, and buy this one!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Live concert from 1948, September 2, 2004
This review is from: Cornell University: Second Set (Audio CD)
Pretty good sound considering this is a live concert from 1948. This was a 19 piece band. How did these guys make money? Anyhow, just like today's artists, these guys must have hated to play the same old hits too because the second to last song is an 8 minute medley with 9 hit songs. The liner notes say "As always, the unhip in the audience indulge in self-congratulatory applause as they recognize familiar melodies"
