Marvelously funny,

This review is from: Corner Gas Season 1 (DVD)
Corner Gas is set in Dog River, Saskatchewan, a little town in the middle of nowhere. Centered around the local gas station owned by writer and star Brent Butt (no, that's not a typo), the show is about Brent, his friends and family, and the people of Dog River.
And it is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. Corner Gas was introduced to me as a Canadian Seinfeld. This has elements of truth. The humor is somewhat similar in style and the story in each episode is as much a frame upon which to hang jokes as an actual mechanim for plot. These similarities aside, Corner Gas is unique, mixing original jokes and off-the-wall characters. If you're not laughing after Brett and his dad start arguing over the introduction of video rentals to the gas station in the very first episode, hit yourself on the head and watch the episode again. You're missing something. As the season continues, it is a pleasure to watch the characters grow. By the end of season I, you'll be rooting for all of them...and laughing at them as well, which is all to the good. I have absolutely no reservations about awarding this DVD set five stars. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it.

Unique Canadian Humour,
By
This review is from: Corner Gas Season 1 (DVD)
While the setting is purely small-town Canada, the humour is universal. Episode 6 has to be my favourite, with all the double-meanings and play on words. Brent Butt is hilarious in a subdued way and the rest of the cast are brilliant. They really work well together. It's nice to watch something genuinely funny that doesn't insult one's intelligence and doesn't have to resort to toilet-humour to get laughs. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good laugh and wanting some insight into refreshing Canadian humour that all can relate to.

Best sitcom on TV, Canadian or American,

I was exposed to this wonder when I lived in Canada for a couple of months. I absolutely fell in love with it. As a American who misses the glory days of sitcom tv this show brings back the good old Seinfeld days. My husband and I have since purchased seasons 1 & 2 and are eagerly awaiting season 3. We have shown them to family in the states and everyone we have shown has fallen in love too and ordered their own copies. I recommend this purchase!!!

Wow, I love this show. A friend sent this to me for Christmas and I want more. My first thought seeing it was, "Whoa! This is really Canadian." It's a very simple comedy with quick wit and smart sense of humor. I can't wait to see more.

Quirky and Charming,

Corner Gas is a beautiful little gem of slightly off-kilter humour from (heh) Saskatchewan. There's something oddly funny about Saskatchewan. (Just saying it is funny...Saskatchewan.) The characters are people you know, people you've met at the diner or seen at the bar, only funnier. (My girlfriend swears that Oscar is her father, and I think she's right.) Good writing and great casting make it the best Canadian show since the unfortunately short-lived Made in Canada. Speaking of which, who can resist a Canadian show that doesn't involve Rick Mercer in any way?

Funniest Canadian sitcom on air,
By
This review is from: Corner Gas Season 1 (DVD)
The funniest Canadian sitcom is probably Rick Mercer's Made in Canada, but that one got killed pretty quickly. The must watch comedy of today is CTV's Corner Gas. It is simply hilarious, with down to earth humour and "Oh my God!" punchlines. And the lack of the laugh track is brilliant.
The DVD basically contains all the episodes. Extra features are pretty limited, but I have never been big on those things anyway.

Too Good to be Such an Unknown,

Having grown up in rural North Dakota, I can relate to the Dog River, Saskatchewan lifestyle. So when I saw my first episode of Corner Gas and found it hilarious, I didn't know if others would relate and enjoy the show as much as I did. There was no need to worry. I have introduced over a dozen people to Corner Gas and everyone loves it. Most are hooked after the first 30 seconds of the first episode. "Are you guys always this sarcastic?" "We've got nothing better to do." That sets the stage for the funniest sitcom to hit the airwaves. It's great for all ages. My 13 year old daughter loves it, as well as all of the adults I've shown it to. I only wish one of the US stations would pick it up, because I have to wait for each season to come out on DVD and order it. The third season just showed up this week and I can't wait to watch.

My husband and I saw the pilot episode of Corner Gas back in 2004 while we were on our honeymoon in Niagara Falls. We laughed our butts off! For our third anniversary this year, I decided to see if I could track down the show, whose name we didn't recall, as a surprise for him. We're now halfway through Season 2, have Season 3 waiting in the wings, and already pre-ordered Season 4.
We have been stumped a few times by "inside" references, but hey, that's what Google is for! What a great show. We love the quirky dialogue and sight gags. Can't wait for Season 5 to make it to us on DVD!

It Just Doesn't Get Any Better,

I work in a nonproffit organization with volunteers. Last year, some of these volunteers began pestering me to watch this new "Corner Gas" show that was coming out. Finally, I did. It was one of those cases where one watches once, to shut people up, and then does not lok back. I am hooked. I watched all of the episodes, bought the DVD's, and even bought copies of the DVD's for some of my American friends, some of whom have said this is the best TV they've seen in years. My only gripe about the DVD's are that CTV's descriptive video track was not included. I am blind, and was grateful to learn that the program was being aired on TV with descriptive video. It would have been very helpful if the descriptive video had been made available as an alternate audio track on the CD's. Even so, this is must-see TV. If you thought that Canada couldn't come out with a decent sitcom, this show will prove you wrong, as it has proven me wrong.

Awesome stuff,

By the time the opening credits of the first episode began I had already noticed striking similarity to 2 immortal shows on US television, now both off the air: Northern Exposure and Mystery Science Theater 3000. This has the same "out-in-the-back-woods" feel of NX but less angsty. It's also got the "tongue-firmly-in-cheek" fun that MST3K presented.
If you're looking for a good viewing you'll probably find it "40km from nowhere." |
