Book Description

January 1, 2001
This story begins at the outset of the World War II, and revolves around the lives of six Lyons Corner House waitresses. Each girl has a different personality, different family background, and different experience of London in the Blitz. There are happy homes and less happy ones, there are brothers and lovers in the forces, there are children evacuated to the countryside, and there are relationships that end in romance and tragedy.

More About the Author

Hi,I am Lilian Harry and am delighted to welcome you to my Author Central page. I've been writing for a long time now, under the name Donna Baker as well as Lilian Harry, and most of my books are classed as 'historical novels', including those set during the Second World War (which is slightly hurtful, since I remember it....) I grew up near Portsmouth in Hampshire, have lived in Devon, Herefordshire and the Lake District (my favourite place!) and am now back in Devon on the edge of Dartmoor, where I am out every day walking my miniature schnauzer. Apart from writing, I ring bells, take part in amateur dramatics, go to concerts, theatre etc, read and play bridge - but only with very tolerant, forgiving people who like me a lot. (Or on the computer!) I would like to be cloned so that I can do all these things simultaneously.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic novel with laughter, tears and joy., February 17, 2002
By
Emily (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Corner House Girls (Paperback)
When I first picked up the book, I was not expecting the hold the novel would have on me. I finished the book with in two days,it is 400 words strong and each one perfectly describes the real feelings of people in London just before the out break of WW2. The relationships that are built up between the 6 main characters and their families and lovers really draw the reader in and make the book come alive. References to real life stories and events just increase the hold that the story has on the reader. As the book twists and turns its was to the climax, it is sorely tempting to read well into the dead of night. The language used really transports you to inner London, the cockney ryhming slang adds to the effect. The tone is exactly right, understanding of the emotions people felt but light and funny when needed and again serious when appropriate. The feelings this book provokes are amazing and you will find yourself hankering for the sequal.

This was my favorite book of Lilian Harry's. It shows the fears, warm and attitude of helping each other in the wartime.
