A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S MURDER by Julie Miller

4.0 out of 5 stars fine tales (at least the two I read), September 17, 2005
This review is from: Cornered: Fooling Around\The Man In The Shadows\A Midsummer Night's Murder (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
"Fooling Around" by Linda Turning. When staid and stuffy Josephine London learns that her great-aunt Boonie left her a detective agency, she kicks up her heels and moves to San Antonio. Her partner Wiley Valentine is first surprised that she had the gumption to make the change and then becomes worried when she accepts the case of a mafia's lord's wife who wants to find out if her husband to cheating on her. While working the case, the pair falls in love. Josephine also inherits a parrot Elliot who talks to people in a human manor and manages to steal the spotlight in this exciting romantic suspense.

"The Man in Shadow" by Ingrid Weaver. For a year, her family and friends worried about Erika, who kept seeing Sloan in spite of knowing he drowned at sea even though his body was never recovered. While working a case on the docks she notices a man who looks like Sloan and goes to investigate, but is knocked out. When she regains consciousness, she finds the man who looks like Sloan brokering an arms deal. When the authorities arrive, Sloan falls into the water and she can't convince anyone that he was with her. Ingrid Weaver's heroine believes, despite the evidence, that her beloved did not die at sea a year ago, leaving readers (and her family) empathizing yet wondering. This is a terrific tale by a fabulous author.

This review is from: Cornered: Fooling Around\The Man In The Shadows\A Midsummer Night's Murder (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Man in the Shadows was the best mystery of the 3. It kept me guessing until the end. I thought the 3rd story, A Midsummer Night's Murder, contained a good romance, but the motive of the criminal wasn't logical. I liked the parrot in Fooling Around, but had trouble believing the guy would fall for his new partner that quickly. And there was no real mystery, either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cataromance.com says....., November 3, 2005
This review is from: Cornered: Fooling Around\The Man In The Shadows\A Midsummer Night's Murder (Signature Select) (Mass Market Paperback)
In this thrilling anthology, there is suspense and danger intertwined with humor and poignant romantic moments. With the unknown elements present in every story, the characters will have to rely on their own wits and the trust of others to keep themselves alive. CORNERED has three compelling stories filled with mystery, action and heartfelt emotions.

FOOLING AROUND by Linda Turner
This delightful story will have you smiling from the snappy dialogue between Josie and Wiley plus the lively comments made by a wise-cracking parrot named Ethel who belonged to Boonie. As we watch Josie change careers, we get to see her determination to take charge of her life by learning how to be a private detective and help Wiley with their cases. With charming characters and a fun plot, Linda Turner delivers a heartwarming story. FOOLING AROUND is a moving love story with plenty of humor and a touch of suspense.

THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS by Ingrid Weaver
With the glimpses into the past history of the main individuals in this story, Ingrid Weaver helps the readers to understand why the characters reacted as they did to certain predicaments. Ms. Weaver's insight into understanding human emotions has let her create a story with many internal conflicts, and her characters had many difficult decisions to make regarding their actions. The danger and suspense will keep your heart pounding from all the unpredictable events which continuously occur on almost every page. There are a myriad of emotions felt by the main characters, and I was deeply drawn into Erika's heartrending love story. THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS will stir one's own imagination and emotions by combining action with romance.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S MURDER by Julie Miller

Since she has always been one to follow the instructions of others and not be a leader, English college professor Hannah Greene finds herself taking charge of not only her life but those in her group when their mountain adventure guide is murdered. Hannah and nine of her fellow colleagues from their college in Kansas have traveled to the Teton Mountains in Wyoming to learn how to work together under extreme conditions. Now with their guide dead, Hannah knows their situation is grave, as no one in the group has any idea how to safely get down the mountain. Luckily, she finds the guide's two-way radio and calls for help. She is able to reach Rafe Kincaid from Extreme, Inc., which is the company they used for their expedition. He is distressed to learn of their guide's death and plans to immediately come to their rescue. When he arrives at their camp, Rafe tells them that they must function as a team or they may die. But it seems as though someone has dire plans for this group, as they start finding people dead and not from accidents. By not knowing whom to trust in their group, Hannah and Rafe will have to rely on each other while trying to keep everyone alive.

Once again, Julie Miller has created numerous characters with very realistic personalities, and each one is distinctive and intriguing. Rafe is a powerful character who knows how to control a situation, and Hannah discovers that she possesses some of these same traits as she learns to stand up for herself. Even though she thinks of herself as a quiet, timid person, she realizes that she has an inner strength which she must now call upon. When these two spirited individuals are together, the sparks fly from their determination and from their attraction to each other. The mystery of finding the killer is well-developed and will keep you guessing until the revengeful person's identity is known. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S MURDER is suspenseful and action-packed from the first page and the love story is impassioned.
