Practical, no theory, plenty of fun activities., August 21, 2009
This review is from: Cornering creative writing: Learning centers, games, activities, and ideas for the elementary classroom (Kids' stuff books) (Paperback)
I home-school my kids and have been looking for some fun writing activities for them. I saw this book at our library and found that it is full of fun writing activities. I also bought a copy for my cousin who is a classroom teacher, and she said the activities looked like they would work well for any elementary grade.
The book is very "old school" with pages printed in typewriter font and line drawings, but the activities are fun for any era. My kids have enjoyed making sock puppets and writing plays for them--that's the first activity we've tried so far.
Here are some random sections from the table of contents:
Candy Couplets (Developing an awareness of poetry and writing couplets)
Chicken Chatter (Creatively writing a dialogue)
Employment Agency (Writing a story describing requirements of an imaginary occupation)
Each activity involves simple hands-on props, and the author attempts to cover the many different forms of writing.
This book is a keeper for any teacher.
