From the Inside Flap

In the stillness of the long hospital corridor, lit only by dim night-lights, something stirs at the far end near a closed elevator door that leads down to the morgue in the basement. Almost in slow motion a section of the darkness separates and moves away from the black oblong of the closed door, and a shadowy figure emerges and shuffles slowly up the corridor.

Doug Heaton, a male nurse working the three to eleven shift at the hospital, sees this from the corner of his eye as he turns to enter one of the patients rooms, but when he glances around quickly to look at the figure it blinks out of existence.

In unspeakable terror Paul Ericson falls in the darkness, a thick foul smelling smoke watering his eyes and filling his lungs. Far below in the darkness tiny lines of red appeared and grow wider as he falls closer to them, until finally he can see the lines are actually huge chasms filled with fire. Down into one of these deep, fire filled, chasms he drops, the walls of the chasm lined with ledges that are filled with thousands of naked souls pushing and shoving to keep from being pushed off into a lake of fire below. In Pauls last seconds he glimpses a large ledge from which a huge set of stairs leads down to the flaming lake. Here, crowding, shoving and pushing, thousands of souls fight to climb up onto these stairs out of the fire. Each in turn pushing the next, the effect rippling up the stairway across the ledge to push thousands, that stand packed like matches in a box, off the edge back into the flames.

In that instant Paul throws his hands out before him to protect himself from the frothing lake of fire he is about to enter, only to awake and find that he has fallen of the sofa to the floor of the candle lit boiler-room where he has been hiding. A sardonic smile crosses his evil lips when he realizes it was only a dream, but when he puts his hands down to lift himself from the floor a searing pain runs up both arms from his hands. In the dim light of the candle he stares horrified at the palms of his hands that have somehow become scorched and blackened.

In the dwindling shadows of the woods the black demon appears again, only this time it raises one of its huge arms and points a claw like finger at the three humans accusingly as they huddled nearby and terrified. In anger, its fire red eyes glaring at the trio, the demon throws its ugly black head back and gives out, what must have been, a blood curdling scream.
