Book Description

6 and up1 and upDiscover America State By State. Alphabet Series
Arbor Day, Boys Town, and Kool-Aid are just a few of the marks the Great Plains state of Nebraska has made on American culture. From the state's eastern border along the Missouri River, where Lewis and Clark embarked on the Corps of Discovery expedition, to the towering geologic landmarks of the west, chronicled in pioneers' journals, there are treasures to explore on each page of "C is for Cornhusker: A Nebraska Alphabet."

About the Author

Rajean Luebs Shepherd was raised in Michigan and has a degree in elementary education from Central Michigan University. After graduating, she traveled the world for ten years with the international performing group Up With People. A substitute teacher, Rajean enjoys sharing her favorite children's books with her students. She lives with her family in North Platte, Nebraska.

Illustration veteran Sandy Appleoff calls home a third-generation farm in Falls City, Nebraska. Currently she is teaching and working on an MFA in stage and costume design at the University of Kansas. For more than 20 years her work in commercial illustration has appeared in a range of venues from corporate advertising, to magazines, to children's books to large-scale installation murals. Sandy's teaching career has also included the Kansas City Art Institute and Colorado Mountain College in Aspen. Sandy's cover art is loosely based on Appleoff Acres and Sandy's studio is at the bottom of the lane. The pride of Appleoff Acres was her grandparents' Rhode Island Red chickens and Black Angus cattle. The gentleman on the cover started farming the land with Sandy's grandfather and, coincidently, he also resembles her father.

5.0 out of 5 stars About "C is for Cornhusker", September 25, 2004
By
This review is from: C is for Cornhusker: A Nebraska Alphabet (Discover America State By State. Alphabet Series) (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book for children (and the young at heart). In writing one of a series about the states, Rajean Shepherd has done a masterful job of looking at Nebraska from lots of angles and putting these together into this book. From the Cornhuskers to Nebraska fossils to Native Americans to the pioneers she goes from Nebraska "A" to Nebraska "Z". The illustrations, that fit so well with the text, are outstanding by Sandy Appleoff. This book would be a great Christmas gift for you, your children, or your grandchildren.

What a wonderful book! Rajean writes this book on several levels, for youngsters to adults! Even though I am a Nebraska native, I have learned many new things about my state from this book! Sandy's illustrations are sweet and simple, with lovely color tones. I have given this book as a baby gift as well as a gift to our elderly friends in England. It has been enjoyed by all and will be treasured for years!
