4.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL FOR THE OVEN, MICROWAVE OR STORAGE!
This handy individual sized casserole is just perfect for the microwave, oven, or storing food in the fridge. I also reccommend the Corning Wear French White 15 oz ovals as well. I use both types when I make a big batch of lazana and place the rest in an individual casseroles. Then, I have my lunch ready for the next day to heat up! Note that this is not the original...

1.0 out of 5 stars It's not the Corningware you think it is--it's only stoneware, will chip & break
The original "French White" Corningware was made of Corning's famous pyroceramic glass, which could be used on the gas stove, put directly in the freezer, put under the broiler right from the freezer, and oh yes, also used in a microwave. And it was very unlikely to shatter if dropped. If you pounded on it with a hammer and nail you might have gotten it to break...

1.0 out of 5 stars It's not the Corningware you think it is--it's only stoneware, will chip & break, August 8, 2009
This review is from: CorningWare French White 16-Ounce Round Dish (Kitchen)
The original "French White" Corningware was made of Corning's famous pyroceramic glass, which could be used on the gas stove, put directly in the freezer, put under the broiler right from the freezer, and oh yes, also used in a microwave. And it was very unlikely to shatter if dropped. If you pounded on it with a hammer and nail you might have gotten it to break.

When World Kitchens bought the license from Corning back in the 90's, they decided to halt production of a line of cookware that would take anything and last forever, and dupe customers, especially brides, into thinking the stoneware "French White" was the same thing as the wonderful French White pyroceramic cookware previously available to their mothers and sisters.

The pattern is very attractive and can be used with any decor, and they do offer many sizes, but this stuff is not, repeat, really not, what people mean when they say "Corningware."

Le Creuset can do most of the above mentioned tasks, but it being metal you cannot use it in the microwave. Stoneware cannot go on top of the stove, and repeated trips from the freezer to the oven will eventually cause it to craze and crack. And stoneware will also chip, and break if dropped, etc. Pyrex glassware cannot go on the gas stove although you can take it from the freezer to the oven, and also microwave it.

The only product which could do ever ything was pyroceramic, and World Kitchens has chosen to remove it from the market because it is "too good."

They have recently brought back a few of the old square shapes, with the Cornflower, or plain white, calling it "vintage," but the French White shape is not making a reappearance yet. If you want it, email them and ask for it!

Meanwhile, don't buy this stuff. Get Le Creuset for cooking and roasting (yes it is expensive but it lasts forever and cooks beautifully), and reheat things in Pyrex in the microwave.

Note that this is not the original pyrocream --instead this is made of stoneware. This stoneware works ONLY in a microwave or regular oven. It does not work on the COOKTOP of a stove. Also note that the newer Corning Ware is of stoneware. The reason that I scored this a 4 and not a 5 is because it is not the original procream and it does not work on the cooktop. You will see more in the excellent BLOG if you look for this in Google called: "What happened to Corning Ware?" This is a real eye opener and I learned much reading this wonderful discussion!

Using this product is the way to go. I think storing, baking or heating in this product is best for your health. It doesn't blister like plastic products do and it seals as well as any other product on the market. I use these in my lunch pack all the time. I gave these, in different sizes, as Christmas presents. I recommend them all to everyone.

Thanks Corning!

I may have changed dish patterns, home colors over the years, but these ALWAYS mix well. Even more important than the microwave, oven, freezer, table, and durability factors is that they clean almost effortlessly. Of course the glass covers are great, however I strongly recommend spending the extra money to buy the plastic lids too as they will stack better in your refrigerator. Whenever possible I buy a large set (and extra lids)as gifts because I know (and have been told) that they will be a most used, appreciated, and enduring gift. If you're not doing a large set, but the 1.5 and 2 quart sizes, they are the most useful. The small ones with plastic lids are also great for small leftovers and bringing and heating work lunches (instead of your partially melted plastic containers). Depending on your preference, they stack or nest wonderfully for storing. Really, there's a reason this same line has been around so long. The beauty is that it "is" plain; it alllows you to be colorful, patterned and creative with the other things without the need for a full change to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite a nice little dish for the price, January 5, 2009

This is the perfect dish for a couple. It is durable, and great for a single meal. It eliminates wasting of food. You can also take a meal to work and have a nice hot lunch. I purchased several of these smaller pieces for a young couple and they find them so useful when fixing meals. Did I mention the prices are great! Quality CorningWare for a decent price.
