CorningWare French White 2-1/2-Quart Round Casserole Dish with Glass Cover

The original "French White" Corningware was made of Corning's famous pyroceramic glass, which could be used on the gas stove, put directly in the freezer, put under the broiler right from the freezer, and oh yes, also used in a microwave. And it was very unlikely to shatter if dropped. If you pounded on it with a hammer and nail you might have gotten it to break.

When World Kitchens bought the license from Corning, they decided to halt production of a line of cookware that would take anything and last forever, and dupe customers, especially brides, into thinking the stoneware "French White" was the same thing as the wonderful French White pyroceramic cookware previously available to their mothers and sisters.

The pattern is very attractive and can be used with any decor, and they do offer many sizes, but this stuff is not, repeat, really not, what people mean when they say "Corningware."

Le Creuset can do most of the above mentioned, but it being metal you cannot use it in the microwave. Stoneware cannot go on top of the stove, and repeated trips from the freezer to the oven will eventually cause it to craze and crack. And stoneware will also chip, and break if dropped, etc. Pyrex glassware cannot go on the gas stove although you can take it from the freezer to the oven, and also microwave it.

The only product which could do anything was pyroceramic, and World Kitchens has chosen to remove it from the market because it is "too good."

They have recently brought back a few of the old square shapes, with the Cornflower, or plain white, calling it "vintage," but the French White shape is not making an appearance yet. If you want it, email them and ask for it!

Meanwhile, get Le Creuset for cooking and roasting (yes it is expensive and heavy but it lasts forever and cooks beautifully), and reheat things in Pyrex in the microwave. Both will tolerate moving suddenly from freezer to heat source.

These are the best casserole dishes. A wonderful friend gave me a set as a wedding present over 5 years ago and I haven't broken even one of these wonderful dishes yet! They clean up easily and are perfect for soufflés or meat casseroles.

This one in particular is great for using for a cheese soufflé. Look for the oval dishes for lasagna and dinner casseroles.

Dishwasher safe and can be put in the freezer and microwave!

What more could you ask for? I am so pleased Amazon started to carry these items and just found them today!

This casserole dish is very versatile as is all Corning Ware but it really needs handles. With handles it would be about as good as it gets!

I thought all Corning Ware was for stove top use. I didn't realize until too late that it says on the bottom "No Stove Top". This is certainly not the Corning Ware that mom used.

I have had one of these for years but last year it evidently decided to go to someone else's house and liked it there so well it never returned. Nobody will admit to having it, sensibly, I might add. This is a capacious, sturdy casserole that will hold enough scalloped potatoes for ten people and still have leftovers. It's attractive and indestructible. Just what's needed for the holidays!

I knew this was stoneware when I got it. I wanted a good covered stoneware casserole dish that I could use for casseroles,breads and yogurt making. This one is perfect.
When I'm baking a casserole or bread I put the dish on a jelly roll pan to bake. They do very well, and my family loves it when I make macaroni and cheese in this because the depth gives them just the amount of crustiness and topping they want with the mac and cheese.
My main use for this is as a crock for making yogurt in. It makes just the right amount for a weeks worth of yogurt in my family, and can go straight into the fridge after the yogurt ferments. I can also use my immersion blender directly in it for mixing in flavors.
I use powdered milk, scalded/cooled to warm low-fat milk and plain yogurt from the grocery store or yogurt starter to make my yogurt, put it in the casserole, cover it, then put it in a warm bath in a 9x13x2 inch pan in my turned off oven. 6-10 hours later, it's set up and I can put it straight into the fridge. This dish is perfect for that.

I also bought this Corningware because the description said "Durable stoneware material designed for use in oven, microwave, refrigerator, and freezer". I just assumed that meant on the stove also. It was just the right size, looked nice, and I have other Corningware that IS OK to use on the stove. It broke during the second or third time I had it on the stove. Unfortunately, I had it for a few months and assumed it was not returnable since I read on the bottom, AFTER it broke, that it was not for stove-top use. It would be fine for baking, which I seldom do, but if I can only use it in the microwave or oven it would not serve my purpose.

You can always count on Corning. Useful shape with or without cover. Nice to have option of casserole type thing or souffle.

I love this dish. It is a great size for family meals, and travels well for pot-lucks and parties. Fits in beautifully with my other serveware with it's classic white color.

It arrived quickly and intact. The lid seems fine although it's not a tight fit it works fine. A very pretty dish, it serves my purposes well. I intend to buy more in different sizes to round out my serving collection. I can't afford a more expensive crockery serving set and the French White Corelle serving dishes are both pretty and inexpensive.
