5.0 out of 5 stars Extra long, extra sharp and extra powerful - super
This is the 3rd or fourth tree pruner I've owned, and I'd never get any other. I have previously used and wore out a gas-powered and an electric drive chain pruner. This Corona is batter than all of them.

2.0 out of 5 stars 14 foot? Might be 7 feet too long
Now here is the reason I am giving this product only 2 stars. The problem with this pruner is that when you extend the pole past let's say the 10 foot range, it becomes extremely difficult to saw with. With the amount of flexibility the fiberglass pole gives, you have 2 major issues. One, is that it's nearly impossible to keep the saw in the groove when starting you...

5.0 out of 5 stars Extra long, extra sharp and extra powerful - super, January 31, 2006
This review is from: Corona Clipper TP 6850 14-Foot Compound Action 1-1/4-Inch Capacity Tree Pruner (Lawn & Patio)
This is the 3rd or fourth tree pruner I've owned, and I'd never get any other. I have previously used and wore out a gas-powered and an electric drive chain pruner. This Corona is batter than all of them.
The extra length of the pole is critical. With this pruner I can reach all the tree limbs I used to get from standing at the top of a ladder and then using a pole pruner.
The blade is incredibly sharp. It cuts straight through branches that my power pruners used to wheeze and struggle with. Using this Corona is also faster than any other pruner I've had. I think that's also a result of the sharpness.
The chain pull-mechanism (as opposed to a rope and pulley) works beautifully. I expect that's another component in why this is easier and faster to use. Once in a while, the chain loops around itself and jams, but that's rare, and is probably a result of the way I manipulate the pruner around branches.
I am a VERY heavy and high volume user of pruners. I wear them out, or they fall apart, or their motors burn out. But not this one! There's no sign of wear and tear. I recommend this tool to anyone who is serious about trimming and pruning their own trees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reach, February 20, 2006
The 14 foot reach is a great asset when it is needed. However, at full length it does increase the effective weight significantly when leverage is factored in. Should be easily handled by those with average strength; but it is a bit more work for this old man reviewer. The telescoping pole reduces this concern when the extra length is not needed.

This is my first experience with a pruner, so while I can't compare it to other models, I can at least review the unit itself. I recently moved into a new house and my insurance company requested that I trim back some branches that were touching the roof. This model gets pretty good reviews here on Amazon, and I wanted to make sure I got something with a good reach and a good drive system. This model satisfies both requirements.

I found the reach of the pruner to be very good. It's true that once you have it extended out to its maximum length it can get a bit unwieldy. That's to be expected, though, as you're now working with a 14-foot pole. My arms did end up getting a bit tired, but I was able to make it through without much problem. I really appreciated that extra length, as I didn't have to get out the ladder. Adjusting the length is very easy thanks to the twist-lock adjustment. The padded grip is a nice addition. I imagine a non-padded pole would really add to your fatigue level.

The pruner does a good job of slicing through small branches, up to about 1 inches or so. Anything bigger and it would start to cut, but not be able to make it through. I did have the chain drive get twisted on me, but it only happened once. Branches had suddenly become much harder to cut. After a bit of investigation, I was able to see that the chain had twisted, and the rope was now coming out of the side of the chain guide, instead of the back. It was really just a minor annoyance and easily fixed.

I found that the rope handle didn't work very well. The handle has a groove that you slip the rope into, which should grab the rope and keep the handle in place. I may have been using it wrong, but it would just slip down the rope whenever I tried to lock it into place and use it. I ended up just wrapping the rope around my hand and giving it a good pull, then moving my hand up, and pulling again.

The saw was effective, but a bit hard to get started. The best method I found was to take a number of downward cuts on the branches, just to get the cut started. Once the cut is going, you can then start using a normal back-and-forth cut. This can be a bit tedious, especially on wobbly branches where you need to wait for the branch to stop swaying after each cut, but it works. The saw was plenty sharp and did a pretty good job of cutting through the thicker branches. The rope can get in the way, but I found that it was easily managed by just holding onto the rope, snug against the pole, as you cut.

All in all, I'm very pleased. I was able to trim back the necessary branches quite easily, and actually look forward to using this tool more in the future. There's a small bit of learning required when using a pruner, but once you figure out a good "system," it's smooth sailing.

I am a 5ft 5in 135lb woman and I found this easy to use. I have never trimmed my trees or even know how to but after reading the reviews on this product decided to give it a try. I used both the clipper and the saw blade. They did the job very well and I found it alot effortless than I thought it would be. I am satisfied with this product!

I have several trees in my yard and I went through several lower cost pruners. None of them could trim or cut any of the branches growing over and near my roof. I purchased this pruner and I am so happy that I did. I will never own another kind. This pruner is excellent. The entension on the pole is very helpful and it cuts the branches fast and easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy!, March 31, 2009

This tool is surprisingly heavy. I'm comparing to my previous pole pruner made of aluminum. The difference in use comes at the end of a cut up in a tree: as full strength is focused on cutting, the fiberglass pole requires a lot of muscle power to support it when the cut branch falls off.

The overall design is good. I especially like the rope handle that can be easily re-clamped along the rope length. The components seem to be all heavy-duty and should be serviceable for the long haul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice saw, December 13, 2009
This review is from: Corona Clipper TP 6850 14-Foot Compound Action 1-1/4-Inch Capacity Tree Pruner (Lawn & Patio)
Just used it to prune the bottom half of a 35 foot blue oak and it was a pleasure. The saw is very sharp and cut through the branches about 5 inches thick in a couple minutes. Just sliding it over the branch under its own weight seemed to be enough for it to cut. The blade did stick in a branch as it started to snap, and I didn't tighten up the extension enough, so it was difficult to free, but once I tightened the extension, it was always easy to free the blade. The pruner also easily cut the smaller branches. The pulley system gets a lot of force with lever action, but the rope does swing free a bit. It would be nice to fashion some way to keep the rope next to the pole. It is also not so heavy for man of average strength - in that regard, I'm glad I didn't buy a moterized pole saw which I would think would be really hard to maneuver. I'm glad I bought this one for the amount of pruning I have - about one acre.

This pole trimmer is just what I wanted. Light weight, easy to extend and cuts very easy. The saw is nice too for the bigger branches. My neighbor and my son have also used it and we all agree that it works great. Stores easy in the rafters of my garage.
