This exceptionally strong, durable, and efficient tool will make your time in the trenches as short as possible. A unique, flat-bottomed blade is designed with one-inch sides, allowing diggers to pick up (and retain) more dirt with each shovel stroke. These deep sides also lend structural strength and prevent dirt build-up in corners. The four-inch-wide blade is made from 13-gauge steel for unparalleled strength and features a v-angled head for effective penetration into the soil. A sharpened edge shaves the bottom of the trench smooth and prevents damage to installed pipes. The four-foot handle is made from sturdy American ash and is ergonomically designed to an angle that minimizes bending, reduces back strain, and improves digging efficiency.

I have been maintaining our condo complex's irrigation system for 7 years now and this shovel has been an essential and unbroken tool. This shovel is tough. I work it hard, and the handle bends under the leverage I apply to pop out a rock or root, but it does not break. I can often use it to cut through smaller roots. The shovel blade is narrow throughout its length, so bear in mind the wider your feet, the less weight you can bring to bear to push the shovel through the soil. This is a necessary compromise to let the shovel go deep without hanging up, but a stiff-soled boot is helpful.

This shovel is not an earth mover. After you have dug down a ways, it is actually faster to put this shovel aside and use a trowel or even scoop with you hands to empty out the dirt. this is a specialist tool. Also, in tight quarters, the long handle can limit your motion and digging effectiveness. But for the most part I find the angle of the blade just right.

A trenching shovel is not needed often by most of us... so I borrowed from a friend. But the Amazon sale price made the purchase a deal too good to refuse. The larger diameter handle and angle of the shovel blade make this a comfortable and efficient tool. Time to replace that water line.... better get your order in for one of these.

My landscaper had a Husky trench shovel and I tried it and loved it! I had to give it back to him when they finished their work at the house so wanted to order one. This one looked just the same online but there's something odd about it because I can't get a good footing on it when pushing it into the ground. My foot keeps slipping off and it's awkward. I did not have the problem with the one my landscaper had with him. This one drives me nuts and I've gone back to using a regular shovel.

It is not apparant in the picture, but the plane of the blade is 35 degrees from the handle. That means when you put the blade down perpendicular to the ground and attempt to use your foot to push the blade in the ground, the handle is 35 degrees away. One would have to have long arms to hang on to it. To hold the handle and push the blade in with a foot, means that one is pushing in at an angle. THis is hard on the back.
The shovel may work in very soft soil, but in any type of clay, it is useless.

Had to do some digging and found it sturdy and tough. I'm just one of those old wood handle guys. I like this. I wish the tabs where you place your foot were a little bigger though. But it's not likely that any grown man will get his feet into a narrow trench, but for starting it would still be nice.

If you need to dig trenches for sprinklers, this is the shovel you want. I did most of my work with a powered walk-behind trencher, but had to dig out a lot of the intersections and some of the areas too close to house or fence and this shovel was great. No complaints.
