Book Description

November 10, 1996
This text provides a hands-on approach to creating or changing a company culture to accept and support a formal team structure. The authors provide their own practical, proven original model for culture change. The book also shows how to change the subculture of an individual department, even when the whole company is lagging. Subtsantial case studies of three companies (Mobil, IBM and Attorney's Title Insurance Fund) and other brief examples are interwoven throughout.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Management consultants Jacalyn Sherriton and James L. Stern contend that many business leaders outwardly embrace the team concept while actually clinging to the old command-and-control philosophy. This immediately dooms the cooperative spirit they profess to support and ultimately threatens the successful operation they expect from their companies. Corporate Culture/Team Culture: Removing the Hidden Barriers to Team Success offers the duo's practical advice for overhauling corporate infrastructures to ensure that teamwork is more than a buzzword.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone tired of the "Program du jour"!, April 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Corporate Culture/Team Culture: Removing the Hidden Barriers to Team Success (Hardcover)
This book is directly on target. Finally, someone is talking about culture and its impact, instead of trying to sell another "program" that will probably fail like all the rest. Sherriton and Stern make a great case for why all the other fad programs that have come and gone don't work: because the culture of the organization doesn't support them! Their model for culture change is detailed and complete, and they backed up their model with tons of examples from the organizations that have successfully used their approach. This is not a book for novices, but anyone with experience in trying to change an organization will immediately see the value of this comprehensive approach. Highly recommended for anyone who finds their organization under performing or in need of change and perplexed as to how to make the changes needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great recommendation by Inc magazine on What's Hot!, August 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Corporate Culture/Team Culture: Removing the Hidden Barriers to Team Success (Hardcover)
Inc. Magazine recently published a listing of recommended books. This one really stood out. It is one of the first one's I've read that actually deals with how to create "real change" in organizations. It directly confronts the pervasive culture that tends to thwart even the most positive organization change. Lots of models and real company examples to prove tackling the culture head on works!

3.0 out of 5 stars No insights here., April 10, 1998

This review is from: Corporate Culture/Team Culture: Removing the Hidden Barriers to Team Success (Hardcover)
I read this book hoping to find insights about corporate culture and how to change it. The authors make a case for changing corporate culture, and tell why it doesn't work. I figured that much out on my own -- that's why I wanted to read the book.

They went on to present a "model" which doesn't help much either. What would have made this book work is a discussion of company norms. People tend to live up to what's expected of them, and norms are expectations of people's behaviors.

IMO, the book is too general. The authors need to try changing cultures themselves, then talk about the specific problems they had.
