Most Helpful Customer Reviews

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful By JUAN C. GUTIERREZ B. on September 1, 2010
Format: Hardcover
I really like this book. It offers an integrated approach to learning Corporate Finance, starting from simplified markets to really complex financial situations. Moreover, the author has an engaging writing Style.

Main strengths of the book:

Uncertainty, Default and Risk (==> Better done than other books. A clear distinction between Expected and Promised Cash Flows)

Capital Budgeting Applications and Pitfalls (The NPV Checklist) (==> Brilliant and useful)

From Financial Statements to Economic Cash Flows (==>A nice review of the Indirect Method approach to Cash Flows)

Pro Forma Financial Statements (==>Well done, although i would like to see a more consistent treatment of Financial Statements Forecasting for valuation purposes using the Direct Method)

Valuation from Comparables and Some Financial ratios (==> Better done than other books)

Capital Structure Dynamics and Capital Strcuture Patterns(==> The Empirical Evidence)

Epilogue (==>Insightful)

The greatest strenght of the book is the progression from the perfect market, LOP world to an imperfect market, constructing numerical examples in order to teach real problem solving.

The author has adopted a simple and straight forward approach to Corporate Finance thereby enabling readers to have a good grasp of the subject without much angst.

This book is divided into seven (7) parts with a total of twenty-six chapters covering fundamental financial topics from time value of money and market imperfections to more advanced topics including options and risk management.

I especially like the detailed coverage on pro forma financial statements whereby the author has made the inherently onerous task of financial projections somewhat enjoyable and less fretful. If readers are able to digest the essence of this chapter, at the end of the day, they will learn the prerequisites to a good pro forma and how to avoid the pitfalls of a bad pro forma.

I personally find this book suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in finance. It is also a very useful source of reference for practitioners who wish to refine their skills in the subject area matter.

I purchased this book as an optional text for a MOOC course, and I haven't been able to put it aside and wait for the course to start! One main feature is the abundance of problems, with detailed solutions at the end of the chapter. This book seems to be a no nonsense approach to the subject. My only reservation in rating the book is that I have not finished it yet. I am using the 1st edition, which I found very cheaply on Amazon. New copies of the second edition seem to be expensive, but I would think that they would be worth the price.

I used this book for a finance class at USC. It's well written and makes concepts much easier to understand. I would definitely recommend this book for students of economics and finance.
