Book Description

Smart, Megginson, and Gitman have created a technologically sophisticated, yet easy to use, book on Corporate Finance. Corporate Finance, 1e, has video interviews with leading scholars such as Myron Scholes, Jay Ritter, Ken French, and many other financial luminaries, along with video clips with business executives from high profile companies such as Intel, Goldman Sachs, and Ford. Practitioners explain how they apply financial theory to solve real business problems. Real-world examples from more than a dozen countries reinforce an applied, global perspective. Understand the nuances of financial theory and how theory is currently evolving using the different videos, integrated flash animated concept tutorials and problem solutions. For example, flash animations allow review of complex topics from portfolio theory to hedging to option pricing. Smart, Megginson, and Gitman created the animations and the videos and integrated them with the flow of the textbook rather than simply creating the clips as an optional add-on. The result: Solid finance coverage within a highly engaging, interactive book that helps one grasp the important elements of financial theory and how that theory is applied in business. You need to see how this book delivers solid coverage coupled with exciting new technology!

Editorial Reviews

Review

I would rate this textbook as Superior. It is incrementally better than the majority of competitors for the purpose of teaching an introductory general MBA course in finance. It focuses on practical applications and concepts, so that many MBAs would find it interesting and understandable.

I consider this to be the best text in this area that I have seen based on the level of detail and thorough incorporation of the finance literature. For these reasons, I would definitely consider using the text and have already recommended it to colleagues.

I applaud and wholeheartedly agree with the authors’ stated objectives for this text—the authors appear to have made major progress in achieving their vision.

1.0 out of 5 stars Supplemental Materials inaccessible, November 11, 2007
By
Book references videos and animations which are supposed to come with the purchase of the text and accessed via access code / serial number. This is not the case. I was told by Thomson support this access must be purchased in addition to text. Very misleading. Now, I have a text with hundreds of distracting side bars referencing videos and animations for some of the more complex formulas and calculation which cannot be accessed without forking out even more money. The text is meaningless and irritating.

1.0 out of 5 stars wordy and rambling, December 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you're looking for concise and clearly explained answers, this book is not for you. The author tends to go off tangent, dragging out his explanation in a long winded fashion. He probably tried to write as if he were telling a story, frequently asking rhetorical questions in a vain attempt to add more drama and stir up interest.

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: Paperback edition is NOT the same as hardcover edition!, October 11, 2009

WARNING: The paperback edition is NOT the same as the hardcover edition! I purchased a paperback edition for use in my MBA course and ended up having to purchase the hardcover edition in order to complete the course. Amazon makes it look as if these are the same book, when in fact they are not. Very frustrating, and very expensive. If you're purchasing this book for a class, make sure you are getting the edition you really need.
