5.0 out of 5 stars Good start to the trilogy October 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Jazmyn Douillard
Family Ties (Corporeal Daughters, Vampire Ancestry)
Book 1 in the Corporeal Daughters Trilogy

A full length urban fantasy novel.
Contains adult situations, coarse language and sexual content.

Kat Andrews is your typical college student who thinks the world is out to get her. Unfortunately for her, she's right. To make matters worse, so is the supernatural underworld.

Kat has always been different, and has lived through her life being bullied. This has enabled her to build a wall around herself, and her strength grows each day as more and more is thrown at her. With Adze and Akka, there is a unique twist to the supernatural, and adds a depth to the story. Law is a character you grow to love over time, and has had it tough himself.

Over all, the book was nicely paced and kept the reader entertained throughout. There was enough descriptive nature that let the reader imagine the story and become completely engrossed by their world.

This book had one of those endings that just has you screaming no, but luckily the rest of the trilogy has been released - I would not have wanted to wait and see where this leads. Next to read will be Memories.

I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh, Fun and Sexy!! October 27, 2012
By tsm
Format:Kindle Edition
This book definitely hit the ground running, building momentum as the story evolved. Douillard gives us her own version of Vampires (Adze), Fae (Akka) and Witches woven into an age old story of good vs evil. With some steamy scenes thrown in there for good measure. If your looking for the usual Vampire and/or Fae story, you won't find it here, I'm telling you the Author has definitely made her story unique and given her own little twist to the genre; making this a fresh, fun and sexy read!

Our heroine, Kat, is strong and fierce; even more so once she comes into her own. She's always been different, but she's fixing to find out just how different she really is when the hidden truth quite literally smacks her in the head! And then we have Law, he has secrets of his own tucked away. The problem is, he can't remember what they are! He doesn't want to love Kat but can't deny the growing attraction that becomes more undeniable with the more time they spend together.

Douillard's way that the Adze are created (vampires) was very unique, kudo's to her for bringing something new to her book. I also thouroghly enjoyed the aspect of a Fae protector; the Akka (kick ass faeries of sorts) were written slightly off kilter as well.

The book went back and forth between Kat and Law's POV without noting in the beginning, this was a little confusing at first. Caught on a few chapters in and then I got into the rythm.

I give this one 4/5, but that's just my two cents.

2.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Potential Hurt by Lack of Focus August 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Family Ties (Corporeal Daughters) by Jazmyn Douillard is a book that has the potential to be a great story in its genre...if only the author would decide which genre it is suppose to be. College student Katriana Andrews suffers from nightmares about a beautiful but somehow frightening woman who has been dead for over two hundred years. Kat must discover the cause of the strange bond between them if she is going to survive against an ever growing list of antagonists that includes an ancient mystical race, gods, and annoying college co-eds.

The problem is that the book never establishes an identity. One moment the flow of the narrative reads like a paranormal romance. The next it takes an abrupt turn into the realm of horror, only to shift just as abruptly into light urban fantasy. The problem is compounded by Kat's first person narrative, which far too often comes across as a high strung teenager texting her girlfriends. She is not a good narrator. She tends to wander along when telling the story, arbitrarily stopping a description to share some inconsequential personal observation or random fact that adds nothing to what is actually going on. Her tone is casual and free-spirited, which seems completely out of place with the plotline. Scenes that should possess a dramatic sense of urgency feel unimportant because Kat just doesn't convey desperation well. Her response to her laptop dying is almost identical to how she responds to an actual physical attack on her life.

Family Ties is a book I wanted to like, and in truth with a stronger focus on the narrator's voice would be an amazing story. Douillard does a fine job of pacing the narrative and rolling out the plot in a way that is engaging and believable. But all that effort at plot, pacing, and world-building is lost because Kat is not the storyteller she needs to be in order to carry the book.
