1.0 out of 5 stars Get off your soap-box!
After having read the book, I was furious at having spent the money to buy it. This book had less to do with "Corps Values", as I learned them at Parris Island (Plt. 3069, grad. Nov. 1979), than it did with Gov. Miller's desire to instill his personal belief system upon the reader.

I don't begrudge the man the opportunity to air his beliefs, but to do it...

I stumbled across this book just as my son entered Marine boot camp. It is what "got me" through his Marine boot camp experience. Every word written by Zell Miller was an inspiration as to why my son joined the Marines (which I did not previously fully understand) and what being a United States Marine means. Beyond Honor, Courage, & Commitment, Zell Miller explains, through his experience at Marine boot camp, how the young recruit gains these humankind values: Neatness, Punctuality, Brotherhood, Persistence, Respect, Shame, Responsibility, Achievement, Courage, Discipline, Pride, and Loyalty. A chapter is devoted to each. In letters to my son, I sent exerpts from the book which helped him through the toughest times and gave him extra encouragement to keep believing in himself and this greatest challenge of his life. This book is definitely a "must read" for family members of Marine recruits, and makes a wonderful keepsake gift. The values it describes is good reading for all family members, young and old, and to embrace and incorporate the Marine Corps values into one's own life can only make our world a better place to live. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Quick Read of Some Really Important Stuff, December 28, 2002

I sat down and read Zell's "Corps Values" in less than 2 hours. It spoke volumns to me about how people's lives can be changed for the better when they have a solid moral and ethical model for proven success to follow. I put in my tour of duty with the US Army but I have always had the highest respect for the US Marine Corps and the men that it produces. Every young man and woman should be challenged to read this little book and begin to practice the keys to molding character and always doing the next right thing. "Corps Values" is a valuable adjunct to solid values taught by your church or synagogue-its a wonderful applications tool to guide us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard "corps" advice for America's youth., July 23, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Corps Values (Hardcover)
Governor Zell Miller of Georgia relates his experiences in the United States Marine Corps to everyday American life. Without a doubt, this book gives much needed direction for a generation of lost Americans. It is simple, straightforward and honest, yet the book provides an opportunity for us as a society to renew our values. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars this book is great and every marine needs to read it, November 29, 1999

This review is from: Corps Values (Hardcover)
I read this book in boot camp at the same island that Governor Miller went to. The book was great. The Corps values we learned at boot camp are right on and this great book expains a lot of what we go through.I'm glad that Governor Miller wrote this book and think every Marine needs to read it.

So Governor Miller, if you read this, thank you for a great book and SEMPER FI DEVIL DOG.

p.s. Some day it would be my pleasure to meet you and shake your hand to thank you for what you have done for me and the United States Marine Corps. DANIEL G STOY LCPL USMC

5.0 out of 5 stars Leadership at it's best. Functional and accurate motivation, May 23, 1999
By A Customer
Governor Miller is blessed with the ability to remember what he was taught and the ability to pass it on to others. His writing spurs memories of Marine Corps training for thousands, and makes us (once again) understand why we are the Nation's best at doing what we do: Supporting, Defending, and upholding the best traditions of America. If more people read this book, and took it to heart, there would be less strife and less hatered in the country. I am an active duty Marine Commander, and I use this book as a gift to motivate and congratulate my subordinates. Find me more of this type of work...

If you want to know about real American values this book must be read. Gov Miller's staight talk about the values he learned as a Marine are the ingredient for America's success. Today young Marines are taught the Corps values of "Honor, Courage and Commitment." The book took me back to my days as a drill instructor and I hope I made the same impression on my young Marines to be and Gov Miller's DI did. I truly enjoyed it and pick it up often to what Dr. Covey calls "to sharpen my saw." Semper Fidelis, Anthony Hudson Capt USMC (Ret.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Preamble for the Guidebook for Marines, September 22, 2000

As I read this little book I reflected on the moments of personal growth I experienced in MCRD, San Diego in 1961. The Governor makes his case as though I wrote it.

We are who we are because we believe; ...that is not a small statement.

I feel that the detractors in this review column didn't READ the book. They critiqued it for their own purposes. It must have made them uncomfortable...It should. For the most part they need boot camp again...they didn't get it.

The only issue I take with the Governors book is; There is no such thing as a former marine...Semper Fi means ...ALWAYS faithful. We are just, simply, Old Marines. I was fishing in our Delta the other day and looked up at the Navy's moth ball fleet. My old ship was tied up there...now I AM an Old Marine.

Our Children are in trouble and we as grand parents seem to be the last hope of getting through to them and their parents. Start with this book, and begin now. THEY will fumigate the White House, burn the matresses and start over. God Help Us - Semper Fi!! - I hope to one day shake the Governors hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marine Values Not A "Sliding Scale", April 12, 2005
Absolutely outstanding book! Having enlisted in the Army as a seventeen year-old during Vietnam and retired honorably as an infantry officer twenty-six years later, I found this book to be a tremendous guide for today's youth. For seven years I taught high school Army ROTC and used this book to instruct young people in a school of middle and low income family students. Some people claim they are offended by Senator Miller's forthright talk. Our permissive society encourages "offense" and those who are "offended" by the truth about today's youth are blinded to the realities of the moral and ethical breakdowns Senator Miller indirectly addresses. What Miller does is tell how he, as a young man with multiple troubles, straightened his life out by adopting the values taught by Marine service. Yes, it may smack of patriotism and unselfish belief in serving others, but I don't see that as bad. My students found the book humorous and pointedly candid. "Corps Values" made a great leadership discussion tool. What my students discovered is that the Marines don't have a "sliding scale" of values. Even in contemporary society, the Marine's adherence to high standards, morals and ethics makes them a force to be admired. Bottom line: they're not politically correct. Those who think "diversity" means doing whatever they feel is right won't like this book. "Corps Values" is written by a man who says what he means and means what he says. I highly recommend this book to those mature enough to understand what he is really saying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Values I think every American should adopt!, May 7, 1999
By A Customer
Zen Miller offers probably the most incredible insight on values that parents should adopt and instill onto their children. You don't have to join the Marines to get these values, you just have to be brought up with them, unfortunately not all parents have these values, so I encourage everyone to read this outstanding book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!, July 17, 1999
By A Customer
When I approached Gov. Miller for a foreword on my book about ex-Marine Eric R. England, ("Eric England: The Phantom of Phu Bai,") he responded ovewhelmingly: He sent a plaque commemorating Eric England as the catalyst for his own success. He writes in his book, CORPS VALUES, that the example of this Marine inspired Zell to become like him, thus saving his own life and bringing him to his position of leadership today. Zell truly found within the Corps the fabric of integrity he needed to structure his life, and the future of Georgia and American politics.

There cannot be enough said in praise of Zell's book, or of the values inculcated via the USMC!
