5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to an Exciting City
If you really want to get a feeling for Miami, read this true crime book along with a standard tour guide. Edna Buchanan is as good as anybody in this genre; her love of the city, warts and all, shines through everyone of these gripping pages.

The dealer represented accurately and provided prompt delivery. The book content was okay. A light and easy read. There was no story line to speak of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, hot, hot, April 5, 2000
This was my second introduction to Edna Buchanan's great reporting skill and her method of explaining the journalism field in a way almost anyone could understand. As a journalist, I was already leaning toward police coverage, but Buchanan's books really made me hunger for more. I've always been fascinated about human evil and, as Buchanan puts it, how in humans, "the person most likely to kill you sits across the breakfast table from you." Domestic violence is such a killer, and too often ignored or seen as a small crime. But police officers, as Buchanan points out, often lose their lives the most at these calls. Excellent reporting and story-telling!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!, October 31, 2002
By A Customer
This book is a gem. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. I even had to rush to the bookstore to pick up Never Let Them See You Cry. This woman has a refreshing tell-it-like-is tone. A truly wonderful book about one of America's most colorful cities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced book, April 23, 2008
Edna Buchanan has written a multi-faceted book about many of the crimes in Miami and the nearby area from her career as a crime reporter for local newspapers.

She wrote about her childhood and the journey that led her to journalism.

The author related how publicity usually aids in solving cases and apprehending the guilty, but not always. The "Pillowcase Rapist" was used as an example where that tactic failed.

Victims are not always located. Like in the case of Christopher Wilder where two of his victims' bodies were never discovered.
The disappearance of a 17 year old girl was an unsolved mystery. The poignant story of her mother's courageous search in dangerous locales and her timeless determination was another side to that story.

Edna Buchanan documented the carnage of the race riots that resulted after the McDuffie police brutality-murder case.

There are a number of true life, colorful characters in "The Corpse had a Familiar Face" that make this book entertaining and hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must for all aspiring journalists!!!!, May 14, 2006
I read this book in college as part of the journalism curriculum. I was skeptical at first, thinking it would be boring like the other required reqdings for class, but to my surprise, it turned out to be one of the best books I have ever read! I even recommended it to a friend recently. All aspiring journalists will be even more motivated to get out into the field once they have read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Enjoyable, October 31, 2007
By
true crime lover (Tampa Bay area, Fl) - See all my reviews
Edna is a great (and very funny) speaker. Her writing is just as good. If you want to learn exactly what a crime reporter does and learn it in a truly very amusing book, this is for you. I read this book before I heard her speak. I expected that the talk would be boring (i.e., couldn't be as good as the book), and was I wrong! She kept all of us laughing for about 45 minutes. If you ever get a chance to hear her speak, don't hesitate! If hearing her appears to be extremely unlikely, you are in luck because you can read her book! Seldom do I laugh out loud while reading a book, but I did while reading this one. If I ever hear the song "I shot the Sheriff" I know I will start laughing out loud again. This is light reading and you won't regret the time you spend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and haunting, April 26, 2011
Buchanan's writing shines in this book much the same way her writing did at The Miami Herald during the turbulent 1980s, when she covered crime in the most crime-ridden city in the nation.

If you want Miami noir, this book as it all -- and every bloody, haunting, murderous bit of it is real. I couldn't put it down for days.

I finished this book in 2 days. I found it different from most true crime books I read, but very interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pick of the Litter, July 17, 2007
First book. Mesmerizing. Tough, critical, witty, a read-to-the-end book (forget sleeping for about two days). A tough lady who won the respect of law enforcement and fellow novelist. Humorous, sad, caring,
historical and factual with no sugar coating. Just the facts, Ma'am! Street smart. If you don't have a member of law enforcement in your family, you need to read this book to garner some idea of their lives.
