Product Description

Dai Morgan has the body of a man and the mind of a child. He lived with his mother in the Mid Wales village of Llan, next door to bright, beautiful 19 year old Anna Harris. The vicar found Anna's naked, battered body in the churchyard one morning. The police discovered Anna's bloodstained earring in Dai's pocket. The judge gave Dai life. After ten years in gaol Dai appealed against his sentence and was freed. Sergeants Trevor Joseph and Peter Collins are sent to Llan to reopen the case. But the villagers refuse to believe Dai innocent. The Llan police do not make mistakes or allow murderers to walk free. Do they?

The Corpse's Tale by Katherine John is a great murder mystery short story. The basic plot revolves around a ten year old murder of Anna Harris, an about to move away and become successful actress and the hottest girl in Llan, a small Welsh village. Basically everyone in the town loved her and when a retarded man with the intelligence and manner of a ten year old named David Morgan was found holding the murder weapon over her naked body, with her earring in his pocket, the town was never the same again. David's lawyers have been appealing against his life sentence since claiming the small town the police didn't bother to investigate the murder and he was wrongly convicted. The courts agreed and David has been set free. Now a couple of city detectives have been sent to do a proper investigation and find out if David really did kill Anna, or if he didn't who did. However most town residents are offended that the local policeman's investigation is being questioned. They see the city police's presence as an attack on the man. Some residents also have plans to avenge Anna and take their own action against David.

It's a great short story, the only thing I didn't like was that David was sometimes referred to as David as sometimes as Dai by the various characters. Settling on one or the other would have made smoother reading. The Corpse's Tale is part of the Quick Reads series of books to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books to try fiction through cheap priced short story length fiction and non fiction. This great book will definitely encourage people to try other books so achieves all the objectives of the Quick Reads experiment. Like the stories found in any various author anthology collection novel, some of these individual Quick Reads short story books are really good, and others not that great.
