Book Description

September 28, 2010
On a good day, the world of political lobbying is complex and cutthroat. Ed Matthews should know: he's been a foreign policy lobbyist for years, working for a firm that specializes in "small countries with big problems." Although his wife, Charlotte, is anxious for him to stop working "for everyone but America," Ed can't bring himself to give up just yet. So when his uncle, a powerful U.S. senator, calls him up to the Hill and hands him a lucrative new client, Ed dares to hope he's finally made it to the big leagues. For the first time, he is in the driver's seat, not his power-hungry boss, lobbying on behalf of the Dungan American Friendship Society. He tackles the job with a newfound vigor-not realizing until too late that the Dungan is a sham, a cover-up for a political conspiracy of epic proportions. Caught up in an intricate web of deception, Ed scrambles to salvage his career and his personal life in this boisterous, fast-paced, and often raucous novel by a former D.C. lobbyist.

More About the Author

James T. Shea (b. 1955) spent fourteen years as a foreign aid and foreign policy lobbyist in Washington, D.C. Jim left Washington in the late 1990s, a time when the increasing polarization of American politics was quickly bleeding into the foreign aid business, and the intellectual rigor as well as the fun going out of it. Much of the rich detail and colorful stories that make up the backdrop of Jim's novel Corruptions reflect actual experiences in Washington, although the novel's action takes place in 2007.

Corruptions took shape over the decade following Jim's departure from Washington, while he was working in higher education fundraising, first at the University of California, San Diego and then at Dartmouth College. Those experiences provided Jim with rich material for his second novel, which will take place at a dysfunctional university.

Why democracy is in trouble November 21, 2011
By ORM
Format:Paperback
A few years ago I was the president of a large medical research organization at a time when federal support for this type of research was being cut. As a result I found myself being whisked around Washington by an "adviser" who knew how to get things done. Shea has captured the way this kind of person works and how the "system" works (and doesn't work) perfectly in this compelling story. He shows how resolving an inconsequential issue may have major implications for important legislation. The sum total of all the inconsequential affairs in Washington is what we have for an important fraction of government - a fraction that drives capable people from government, destroys faith in our system, and cheats the public while rewarding special interests. There are no murders, car explosions, or other such diversions in this novel. What we have here is mostly people talking to each other and Shea has captured the speech, the habits, the personalities and the ambitions of our political establishment perfectly. When people in future years want to find out what went wrong in 21st century Washington they will turn to Shea's book to learn just how it happened. In the meantime we have a very readable and entertaining book on our hands.

Riveting November 25, 2010

Format:Paperback
Most books of this genre becoming boring after a few chapters since they zone in on chaos or corruption and forget that in real life characters such as these are complex humans with diverse facets to their persona and character. Jim Shea manages to capture all that - the book was really good, full of sub-plots and riveting. Wonderful mix of the complex and cut-throat world with the personal feelings and angst of those involved. One is left wondering whether the situations really took place and is left hoping that Ed and Charlotte are now happy and contented...

This book captured my interest right from the first page. It's about the unsavory business of Washington lobbying, and the author delivers with a panoply of dodgy characters, unethical behaviors, and sordid outcomes, all while thoroughly keeping us interested in the protagonist's inner turmoil and increasingly questionable ethics. To an outsider like me, the book was an education, and a series of plot twists kept me on edge straight to the end. There are countless washington-insider books; this one has the feel of a trustworthy guide who is taking you down fascinating alleys that you'd never dare enter on your own. I recommend this one, and I hope for future books from this author!
