Product Description

Neutron Series SSDs deliver both super-high IOPS - Important for data intensive tasks like video and image editing - as well as superior sequential read speeds for lightning fast file access. The state of the art LAMD LM87800 processor delivers phenomenal real world performance and impressive read speed regardless of data type, breaking new ground for SSD benchmark.

From the Manufacturer

Neutron Package

Neutron Series GTX is Corsair's flagship line of SSDs, designed for high-end desktop and notebook PCs. Powered by an advanced Link_A_Media (LAMD) SATA 3 SSD controller, the GTX excels at both random read/write speeds and sequential write speeds, and provides amazing responsiveness for all types of data-intensive work.

Overview

Designed for Multi-Multi-Tasking

Neutron Series GTX is designed to support complex data-intensive work that involves accessing multiple files simultaneously — video production, large-scale graphics editing, or running multiple office applications at once. Neutron GTX’s extremely high random IOPS performance gives you the nearly instantaneous response you need for your high-end desktop or notebook PC.

Save Fast, Save Often

Neutron GTX’s flagship credentials include incredibly fast sequential write speeds, regardless of file type. SSDs compress data on the fly as they save, and many solid-state drives slow down significantly when writing data that’s already compressed.

Neutron GTX is different: saving large videos and images happens so quickly, the first time it happens, you might have trouble believing that it’s really working.

Neutron dimensions
The 7mm height is compatible with slim notebook designs. (larger image)
Performance that pushes the limits of SATA 3 6Gb/s

Neutron Series GTX is designed to take full advantage of the high-speed standard to get the most performance out of the latest PCs. It’s also fully backward compatible with SATA 2.

Broad compatibility with PCs, notebooks, and ultraslim notebooks

Neutron Series GTX SSDs follow the universal 2.5” standard, and easily mount in desktop PCs with 2.5” drive bays. Or, mount it in a hard drive bay using the included 3.5” adapter.

The 7mm form factor fits both standard notebooks as well as slim notebook designs. If you’re considering upgrading your notebook to something slimmer, your Neutron can move with it.

Features

Professional-grade LAMD SSD controller

The LAMD controller is designed to deliver both super-high IOPs — important for data-intensive tasks like video and image editing — as well as superior sequential read speeds for lighting fast file access.

Great sequential read speeds, regardless of file type

SSDs compress and decompress files on the fly. Some solid-state drives hit a performance bottleneck when opening files that can’t be further compressed. This includes video, audio, and image files — and if your PC is also your entertainment center or you work with media files as part of your job, lesser SSDs can slow you down. The real-world performance design focus of the Neutron Series GTX means impressive file loading times even with non-compressible data.

Install it almost anywhere

Neutron Series GTX follows the universal 2.5” standard, for quick installation into most notebooks. It fits into place on newer PCs which have built-in 2.5” drive support, and with the included 3.5” adapter, you can install it in a standard hard drive bay.

Many slim notebooks get that way at the expense of height restrictions for SSDs. Neutron GTX is just 7mm high, so it can go where some other SSDs can't.

Built for SATA 3 6Gb/s

Neutron Series GTX is designed to support the high-speed standard to get the most performance out of PCs. It’s also fully backward compatible with SATA 2.

Maintains its Performance Over Time

Neutron Series GTX SSDs support the Windows 7 TRIM command. This allows them to store only the data they need and perform memory optimization to ensure the fastest possible write speeds.

Solid-State Reliability

Because SSDs have no moving parts, they can handle shock, vibration and temperature changes far in excess of traditional hard drives. That's important for desktop PCs, and essential for notebooks.

Cool and Quiet, with Low Power Consumption

Traditional mechanical hard drives spin at thousands of revolutions per minute. This takes power, and generates noise and heat. Since SSDs have no moving parts, there's no noise or vibration, and the lower power consumption helps keep things cool inside your PC. It can also save battery life on notebooks.

This drive is a persuasive alternative to the OCZ Vector and the Samsung 840 pro. While those models have better theoretical specs the truth is that all of these drives as so blazing fast that even the most extreme users will not notice the difference. If you truly care that a program loads in 95/100 of one second compared to one full one second get one of the faster drives. If not, shop on price and how you feel about the manufacturer's reputation.

One important note is that this is a slightly newer model of the drive compared to the GTX released last year and its specs are slightly worse because Cosair switched NAND suppliers so any on-line review written before February 2013 will have wrong numbers. These new drives cannot be used in a RAID array with the older drives because the firmware is different. Cosair has not stated if they will update the firmware on the older drives.

I used Bootracer to test boot up times. Under Win 7 64 bit the time to log-on was ten seconds. For comparisons sake, the same time using my old WD 7200 RPM Scorpio Black laptop drive on the same system was 39 seconds. From log-on to desktop was an additional 5.5 seconds on a new installation for a total boot-up time of 15.5 seconds on the GTX. This emphasizes the point I opened with.

*EDIT* Surprisingly, just yesterday morning this drive failed to boot. Would not show up in the BIOS at all. Tried different SATA ports on the motherboard, different power and data cables. My SATA III hard drives and DVD/RW drive would all boot using same cables and ports however. Failure after 5 days of use easily less than 300 GB of read/writes. Not going to down rate this drive at all however, it worked flawlessly and was incredible fast and responsive until it failed. Contacted amazon yesterday and replacement is already out on the truck for delivery. Return rates on SSDs are around 3% for Corsair at the moment, and the return rates on the particular kind of mechanical HDDs I buy is at almost 10%. In 3 years, I have had not a single bad HDD arrive DOA or fail on me yet. I just got bad luck this time. But I will stick with this SSD since the replacement is on the way, and Corsair is hands down one of the best brands you can buy. If I have anymore problems I will of course post my findings here. *END EDIT*

My first SSD. Installed in a new Ivy bridge gaming system just yesterday. Of course plugged into one of my two SATA 3 gen (6 g/bit second) port on my mobo.

Some people whine and complain about slower speeds. Make sure you are plugged into the correct ports, and that you have the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard installed.

My benchmark for this drive using CrystalDiskMark with 9 passes of 1000MB files:

Sequential: Read: 516.2 MB/s Write: 450.5 MB/s
512K: Read: 377.8 MB/s Write: 443.0 MB/s
4K: Read: 28.60 MB/s Write: 109.2 MB/s
4k QD32: Read: 356.7 MB/s Write: 342.8 MB/s

I highly recommend this drive. Of course using it as a storage drive is silly, but for a boot drive and mainly used programs/games this drive is not only the 2nd fastest I know of (Samsung 840 Pro is a bit faster) but Corsair is pretty much the most reliable brand you can buy from these days.

Installed in a new Dell XPS system, i7 4470, 12 Gb ram, inexpensive graphics card.
Drive installed easily in computer with the included adapter, needed to purchase additional sata cable.
Using the ssd for operating system and programs, applications. A 1Tb spinner that came with the computer for data.
Win8 boots faster than I can sit back down in my office chair, applications like Word in just seconds.
What else to say, it works and works up to my expectations. Comes with a good warranty, talk to me in a year or so-
we will see how it does.

I cannot describe how [superlative] the experience of upgrading from a 7200RPM conventional drive to this has been. Seemingly orders of magnitude faster operations of loading the OS, programs, and data off of this.

It is absurdly fast, and everybody should be putting this, or ones like it, into their computers.

For this drive, specifically, had no troubles putting it into my desktop. It came with a caddy to be able to mount it in a larger bay, but my case already had purpose-built slots for it.

Note that this does NOT come with SATA cables. You'll have to bring your own.

My computer boots up in 8 seconds. I love this hard drive. They're expensive, but it you're trying to load an operating system on the hard drive, it's totally worth it. Very fast, when compared to a mechanical hard drive.
