Product Description

The Corsair AX860 power supply runs quieter, generates minimal excess heat and it’s earned the 80 Plus Platinum seal of approval, your guarantee that you’re making the right choice for smart, efficient power delivery. Because the AX860 is so efficient it operates without the fan even spinning at low and moderate loads. All cables detach from the power supply. During installation, this gives you the flexibility of using only the cables you need for a clean system build with optimal airflow. Built with High-quality 105C capacitors and upgraded components the AX860 is rated to run at 50°C and provide rock solid power throughout its seven year warranty.

I read, I researched, and it spent a good amount of time doing this. Corsair AX860 has many complaints of "coil whine" or a constant high pitched sound even if your computer is off. It gets worse when your computer is on. I thought "how bad could it be?" and "others were just unlucky." Big mistake. Not surprisingly, this item states "unavailable from Amazon due to investigation" at the time of this review.

After trying to ignore it, the coil whine is REALLY annoying after hours of sitting near the computer. It is a subtle noise that you really notice because it is really high pitched and stands out from other environmental noise. I bought a Seasonic X850 PSU to replace this and couldn't be happier! This PSU, like the Corsair AX860, is made by the best "internet rumored" US PSU manufacture, Seasonic. The Seasonic X850 has different branding (looks really similar to the Corsair AX860 though), different cable patterns (Corsair AX850 cables don't work on the Seasonic X850), does not come with all sleeved cables (only the motherboard cable is), and a 80 Plus Gold rating (opposed to 80 Plus Plat of the Corsair AX860). But it doesn't have a droning high pitch noise! It is literally mute if you put your ear on it while the computer is running or not. The fan doesn't turn on until your computer parts demand more power. At full blast, the fan is no louder than "quiet" rated computer fans.

After doing some research, the reasoning behind the Corsair AX860 and its identical twin Seasonic 860 having the high pitched "coil whine" noise deals with recent requirements changing for 80 Plus Platinum rating. Different components have to be used to meet this new high efficiently requirement, which results in electronic noise of coils.

Edit (01/29/2013): Well, it's been a month and this power supply has been running like a champ. I'm going to bump my rating up back to 5 stars, on the strength of Amazons service. This is one of thee best power supplies you can get. And as of right now, it's on sale for $170. Not everything is going to work out as you would hope it should, but I am now confident that when I buy a product that is defective from Amazon, I know I'll have peace of mind due to their superb return service.

Edit (12/21/2012): I originally gave this power supply a 5 star rating, and you can see below of my original review on why. The reason why I am now giving it only 4 stars, is because the power supply became defective just over a week of use. I am utterly disappointed, yet perplexed on how or why it did so. Still, I liked this unit so much, that I decided to give Corsair another try. Hopefully, it lasts a whole lot longer then a week. Great kudos to Amazon for promptly sending me a replacement quickly. Your service never cease to AMAZe me.

This review is for the AX860 model. I just wanted to specify that because Amazon seems to group their reviews of different models within the same signature line. C'mon man!

Admittedly, when I began to build my first gaming computer, I wanted components that were of quality but yet different from the norm. Seeing as a lot of people have Corsair products, I wanted to be different and chose a brand (Silverstone) that was of the same caliber.

This power supply is great! Defiantly worth the purchase, I have heard other people complain about coil whine but I have had mine 3 months and have not heard a thing from it.

Have a few of these newer AX PSUs and have not had any problems with them. For the price paid it would be rather disappointing if there were significant flaws. I use most of my AX supplies in very lean machines so the fans in them hardly ever spin. I could be running on higher efficiency levels with smaller supplies but then I would have the fans spinning more and I feel that the extra few $ in initial purchase cost and the slightly lower efficiency are a price worth paying for the supplies being silent. Have tried fanless PSUs in the past but both had a very annoying high-pitched "coil whine" which caused me to return the units and get one of these instead.

I purchased this PSU despite some reviewers reporting that their brand new unit was exhibiting coil whine regardless of whether their PC was on and off. Coil whine is a (usually high pitched) electrical buzzing noise. It sounds sort of like an annoying mosquito. This is especially bothersome if your computer is in your bedroom. The only way to get the noise to stop is to flip the switch on the PSU itself. But reaching behind your computer to turn it off is an unnecessary hassle, especially for what is supposedly a high performance PSU.

Pros:
Modular
Silent Fan

Cons:
Expensive
Coil whine (all of the time while the PSU switch is on)

I asked Corsair for an RMA. I think if I return it to Amazon, I'll most likely get another unit from the faulty manufacturing batch. However, they have still not replied about issuing an advanced RMA (I cannot use my computer if I ship the power supply back to them first).
