A gift for the ages.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Cortejo y Epinicio (Paperback)
I'm an aficionado of Latin American literature, and was pleased when I saw on-line that LOM Ediciones was bringing out a new edition of this legendary but hard-to-find work. I've been poring over it in every spare moment, and feel I have only begun to penetrate its richness. Most recently I have been reading and re-reading a poem whose title is the English word TWILIGHT - a sonnet in alexandrines that discloses additional unexpected inner levels of structure and meaning each time I go back to it, not unlike the matryoshka that evokes surprise and delight as each inner doll is exposed. I was initially struck with the beauty of the poignant evocation of the poet's enchantment with the daily indeterminate struggle between day and night, light and darkness. Further careful reading uncovered an exposition of the practical dynamics of each human being's daily internal struggle between the impulse to live and the impulse to die. Energized by this discovery, I delved deeper and discovered that this poem is only incidentally about twilight. It is actually an exquisitely detailed narrative of one of the most famous events in human history, but I won't spoil this surprise for other readers. I've heard about Rosenmann-Taub for years. Having this seminal book of his in hand convinces me that he is one of the greatest poets of our time.

If you love Neruda and Lorca...,
By Joseph (New Orleans, LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cortejo y Epinicio (Paperback)
...you need to read David Rosenmann-Taub. As a long-time admirer of the other two authors - their lyricism, sense of tragedy, and panoramic view of life - it was a revelation to find another poet with so many of these same qualities but in an altogether different key. Yet Rosenmann-Taub's originality and depth of perception make reading him (dare I say it) an even more moving and challenging experience for me. The poems `Schabat' and "Un gato coge a una mariposa..." have touched me as only the greatest poetry can. Rosenmann-Taub recreates the Spanish language in ways I wouldn't have imagined possible.
