A Remarkable Album from a Remarkable Voice,
By Robert (MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Corvidae (Audio CD)
Myshkin's last album Rosebud Bullets was exceptional, and Corvidae more than lives up to that high standard. A generally more subdued affair, Corvidae features the same innovative arranging and strong song writing which made Rosebud Bullets such a riveting album. What truly makes the album memorable is Myshkin's astonishing vocals. She effortlessly combines the best qualities of a jazz and a folk singer, singing with a swinging smoldering intensity while simultaneously creating an intimate emotional connection with the listener. One of the albums many highlights is "The Dance". The song tells the heartbreaking story of a woman living as a war refugee. It has a universal quality shared with some of the best political songs, the woman in the song could just as easily be living during World War Two or as a refugee in present day Sudan. |
