Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7 Siegel's smoothly written account of Corazon Aquino's accession to power in the Philippines is full of information on the tumult and terror of political life in that troubled country. The position of the Aquino family in Philippine society, the tempestuous career of ``Ninoy'' during his years of political opposition to Presi dent Marcos, and the falling of the mantle of opposition to Corazon Aquino after the death of her husband are clearly de scribed. The book is useful for learning about a country which is much in the news and is of particular importance to the United States. It is not as useful, how ever, as an introduction to the personality and character of Corazon Aquino. Most of the book is centered on the career and tragic death of her husband and on the problems she faces today as president of a violence-torn land. Laurie Nadel's Cora zon Aquino: Journey to Power (Messner, 1987) is a more effective biography, but Siegel's book is an excellent introduction to the current political drama taking place in the Philippines. Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, N.J.
