5.0 out of 5 stars Not like Mom's but modern substitute
I noticed a lot of comments about the plastic parts. They're refering to a plastic gluide attached to the metal supports that alow the steps to slide out insead of tipping back and then forward. I can't tell you how many times my grandkids got their fingers pinched on that setup on my old stool. The new one is so much safer for the fingers. I love the color, it is a nice...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
I bought the yellow version of this step stool - my grandma used to have one just like it, or so I thought. This is not the step stool I was hoping for. It's clunkier, cheaper, and not the same "shiny" vinyl that my grandma had. The step stool mechanism on this new one is just cheap plastic that allows the steps to "slide" in and out. I had a little bit of trouble putting it together. Oh, and on the instructions, you're told that you'll have to periodically retighten the bolts! What - is this thing going to come apart with use?!?! Overall, a disappointment and not worth the amount of money I paid for it. Nice idea, but I want the REAL thing, not some cheap imitation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Retro step stool chair, July 21, 2005

Assembly was no problem, but did reveal why weight is limited. I can rig up some reinforcements, but some folks won't have the know how to do so. Great for little kid use, not so great for 'typical' adult use. I wouldn't use it in some cases as I did our chair/stool in years past. A handy piece of furniture to have, but not quite the structural 'rock' that I was led to believe in the ads. I don't quite regret purchasing it.

I was afraid it was going to be the old bright yellow of the 50's. I love my stool. Fits in its spot nicely, and tip it to the back and drag it where I need it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too small for average adult, March 2, 2006

I need a step stool to reach the upper kitchen cabinet shelves. Combining the step stool with a chair is a great concept. But the chair is so small even I find it uncomfortable. I wouldn't recommend this chair for an "average" adult. Perhaps the product should be named as Retro Yellow Chair with Step Stool for Kids.

The chair serves the purpose as a step stool. But the small chair is disappointing. There is a market for a step stool chair that is comfortable and stylish. This product can be great with a redesign to accommodate average adults so the chair can be used as it is intended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Retro Chair, January 15, 2006

This review is from: Cosco 11-120CBY1 Retro Chair/Step Stool Yellow (Kitchen)
A little smaller than the original from my childhood and the steps don't work like the steps on the original from years ago. However, it still comes in handy in the kitchen.

This is a nice chair with very good padding for what I am using it for. The steps seem to side in their on when I need them.I
might have put a liitle to much lubricant on the sliders.
This is what I have been looking for to rest myself when I am
planting my flowers seeds in my plant romm.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very retro - assembly was not pleasant, May 30, 2007
This review is from: Cosco 11-120CBY1 Retro Chair/Step Stool Yellow (Kitchen)
The Retro Step stool is functional and really looks like the one from years ago - very cool if you like retro. The yellow is truly a very pale yellow.
The only negative thing about this product was the assembly of the yellow horizontal bars that go on the bottom of the legs. They were not shaped properly and kept coming off. We had to use A LOT of muscle to get the screw tight enough to hold it in place - and that extra force caused us to crack the paint that was on the bars :-(.
I would have sent it back but my husband insisted he could "make it work" and get it together.

I got a couple of these chairs (red and yellow) over two years ago to use in our kitchen. They are good because they have a small footprint and fit in a tight kitchen. I think they are uncomfortable to sit on, but I doubt you could make it any more comfortable and keep the dimensions acceptable and my kids (2 and 4 when we first got the chairs) love them.

I don't think the quality is all that unacceptable considering the price, you just don't get great stuff for <$100 any more. There have been kids beating the crud out of ours for over two years and I've never had any trouble with them breaking. They say the steps come out of their tracks but we've never had that happen, they say the chair is mostly plastic and cheap but the only plastic I can find is the step unit tracks (they are pretty solid thick chunks of plastic) and they both have metal arms outside of them to also brace the taller legs. Other than the steps being useless for anyone over 3 feet tall they are fine. We got one assembled and one we had to assemble, I didn't think it was too hard to put together and as long as you use the right tools and follow the instructions you'll be okay.

The bad part of the chairs is that they are narrow and tall making them quite unstable. The kids managed to tip them over backwards more than once in the first few months they used them. I'm probably the worst dad ever not to toss them out right then but they never got more than a bruise and they manage to hurt themselves with everthing once or twice...lol. They figured out what not to do on the chairs and no one has tipped over for the last year and half at least. Also, the black rubber/plastic 'stuff' on the steps has deep ridges in it (for traction I guess), these are really hard to clean if the kids spill something down there (especially when they don't tell you and it gets crusty!!!). Those are my biggest two gripes about the chair.

3.0 out of 5 stars retro yellow, May 6, 2007
This review is from: Cosco 11-120CBY1 Retro Chair/Step Stool Yellow (Kitchen)
Cute, but smaller than I expected....Having COSCO imprinted on the upper back of the chair pretty much destroys the retro/vintage look, but if you don't care about that aspect it is useful and nice color

This chair was not at all what I thought it would be. I have learned to believe the customer reviews after this purchase! I should have known that people who take the time to write reviews are either really happy or really disappointed with the product and their opinions should be taken into consideration BEFORE purchasing an item. This chair is cheaply constructed and somewhat difficult to assemble. The end result is an uneven, wobbly chair that is only semi-safe to stand on! If this is an example of American workmanship, I think we are in real trouble. I would not recommend this chair.
