From the Publisher

The number of people turning to cosmetic surgery are legion, and those numbers are increasing. As baby boomers are aging, they are turning to cosmetic surgery, but so are younger people wanting to improve their looks. Cosmetic surgery is no longer the province of the wealthy. While the media focuses on stars who take advantage of these improved procedures, taking out second mortgages, paying with credit cards, saving up to make it happen, Americans in all walks of life are turning to cosmetic surgery to enhance their looks. Cosmetic surgery is no longer thought of as self-indulgent or frivolous; instead, it is considered an enhancement which can facilitate everything from better job prospects to better self-esteem. In her new book, COSMETIC SURGERY: Before, Between and After, master makeup artist Susan Gail uses her 22 years of experience working with reconstructive surgeons, dermatologists, psychiatrists and psychologists as well as her own recent foray into plastic surgery to give her readers an up-close look at the process. Honest, plain-spoken and often funny, Susan addresses everything from choosing the right doctor to post surgery sex! Endorsed by some of the best cosmetic surgeons in the country, COSMETIC SURGERY: Before, Between and After is a must-read for anyone contemplating plastic surgery.

I bought this book because the reviews were so glowing. The information may be valuable, however, the prose is so dense, redundant and sprinkled with new-age philosophy/silliness that I find it hard to slog through. In fact, her style is so "California" it verges on satire, like something a character from the Steve Martin/Sarah Jessica Parker "L.A. Story" would have written.

There is some good information in this book and I wish this book had been accepted by a respected publisher. A professional editing job would have been able to cast out the chaff from the wheat and readers would have been spared all the distracting and self-indulgent flourishes (is it important to know how much she likes keeping a *spiral* journal using *rolling ball writer* pens?).

Your honest, straightforward and very funny book "Cosmetic Surgery: Before, Between and After" was an invaluable tool as I researched, underwent, and recovered from my recent neck lift. Both your book and your post-op Survival Kit helped demystify the whole process. I read and re-read your book several times. I used it for "cramming" the night before my surgery and it was awesome! There are people you like and trust on sight, you are one of them. If you are reading this and needing some REAL help...buy this book and tell your friends.

This book makes you stop and think what you do on a daily basis and what you will have to change after surgery to get the results you want. It is so detailed and so specific that it cuts down on many questions from patients regarding post-op care....I know, I field the calls. A great foundation for how to prepare mentally, physically and emotionally for surgery as well as your recovery, while always being realistic. Those of us who know the importance of following instructions are using this book as a bible!

Susan Gail has written a user friendly guide to having facial cosmetic surgery. She fills in the gaps between what her doctor told her and what she really needed to know to take care of herself , all the practical details. How does one look, eat, bathe, sleep, cope, and survive the few days and weeks after a facelift? I would recommend this very thorough planning guide to anyone thinking about this procedure. An easy read that prepares one for hard realities!

I purchased your book about a year ago in preparation for a facelift and eyelift. I finally had the surgeries four days ago, and your information has been -- and continues to be -- a lifesaver! Even my own sister, who had this kind of surgery a few years ago, was not as informative as you have been. I still have a way to go with healing and such, but...it all would have been much, much harder without your book!

Great book for those contemplating a facelift, but this book doesn't really cover any other operations. I could have done without the "choice" words in it also!!

As a member of the nursing profession, and as a caregiver specializing in post-cosmetic surgery recovery, I highly recommend Susan Gail's book, Cosmetic Surgery Before, Between and After.

After working in the field full time for a number of years, I felt I knew just about everything there is to know about recovery from cosmetic surgery. However, after reading Susan Gail's book, I gained many new insights. Now, I highly suggest to all my clients that they read Ms. Gail's book before surgery.

Susan Gail's book is full of extremely helpful and thoroughly researched information, including how to find the right surgeon, possible dangers, what exactly the surgical process entails, and how to be prepared for every aspect, psychologically and physically, before, during and after surgery. Ms. Gail is extremely honest about expectations, fears and outcomes. She is extremely brave in chronicling every aspect of her experience, including photos, from informing friends and relatives, dealing with their judgment, pre-surgery jitters, post-surgery depression and her final satisfaction with her decisions.

Not only is Cosmetic Surgery, Before, Between and After thoroughly informative, Ms. Gail's humorous writing style makes her book an enjoyable, funny read. For anyone contemplating cosmetic surgery, this book is a MUST!!!

What an amazing book! What a powerful tool!
I heard Susan Gail speak at a Professional Women's event- and purchased her book on the spot. I am so glad that I did! This book has given me information so unique and helpful- that I felt I wanted to share my experience with other readers.
What I learned from Susan's fact packed book- was how to deal with my own internal questions about Plastic surgery, how to approach the search for the right doctor- and how to sound like an informed patient with intelligent and real questions while deciding on who would give me the results I wanted and the best possible care.
I felt empowered by the book- enjoyed the easy and often humorous stories about Susan's experiences, and felt that I was armed with all the help I could possibly obtain from a self-help book. I made a list of questions- with the book's suggestions- and when I asked them at the various doctor's offices- I was often surprised by the responses. Some negative, some positive- and some clearly NOT for me. The book helped my organize my thoughts- and really helped me prepare and chart my personal Plastic surgery experience.
Another thing- I ordered Susan Gail's Post Surgery kit- and found it to be one of the best things I have ever purchased sight unseen. It is the complete collection of "stuff" you need to recover without going to the store a million times- driving everyone in the house nuts looking for supplies- and really helped me when I felt overwhelmed about preparing for recovery. It was the least expensive part of this whole process- and other than the surgery itself- the most critical! I urge everyone to buy the kit- you will buy the contents at one point anyway- and the kit is all inclusive and on hand from the beginning.
