Spyware alert!,

Do not buy this or any Cosmi or Starshine software. It installs Spyware on your computer and it will take an expert to get rid of it. Don't make the same mistake I did!

I first burned a short film as a test. Unlike their claims, it does not play in every dvd player. It worked in 2 out of the 3 dvd players I tested. Secondly, the quality is the equivalent of watching tv with rabbit ear antennas with weak reception. Not appropriate as back up for an original dvd. I tried a longer movie and began the burning process before leaving for work. 10 hours later when I arrived at home it was still burning. I had to manually shut down my machine to get it to stop (program not responding.) I was afraid that it might have damaged my burner since it ran all day long, but luckily it seems fine. Given the quality of the first test copy, I decided it wasn't worth trying again. Then, of course is the spyware issue. I read the other reviews and searched the internet and found that cosmi has been allegedly associated with a firm that bundles adware with certain programs. If true, this is reason enough not to buy a product. However, my spy-remover software did not detect any suspect programs spyware/adware. Though upon uninstalling this DVD ripper, I noticed that there were programs and files left behind without an uninstall option. And if that all is not enough, be aware that you cannot copy encripted DVDs with this product anyway... which pretty much rules out every single comercial DVD ever released. Unless of course you obtain additional software to get around this. Such software is generally not available commercially due to a recent court ruling, but there is always freeware. Regardless, do yourself a favor by a real DVD burner and use different burning software.

I bought the full retail "suite" at $19 which also includes this product. It doesn't do anything-- just like some other reviewers say on this and the retail package. It wouldn't even recognize that there was a DVD in the DVD player. I don't mean that it wouldn't see the player-- I mean it couldn't read DVDs at all. Apparently, judging from other posts, it simply is incompatible with some DVD players. Also, when you run the program the display is all squeezed together so that you cannot change many options. Customer service sent me on the run around for another week and finally just about admitted that they know their software doesn't do anything. They also would not refund my money. I threw this junk software away-- it is so bad that I couldn't bring myself to foist it on someone used. Go with shareware instead. I will never buy another product from COSMI.

I was trying to copy "The Butterfly Effect," but the DVD Ripper didn't do anything. On the other hand, I was able to copy the movie with DVD Ripper Suite. You know, there are two different products on the market: DVD Ripper and DVD Ripper Suite(this one works). Make sure you buying the right one.

My Experience thus far with two different versions of DVD RIPPER is excellent. I got suckered by a Canadian DVD Copy product that was worse than junk. The Canadian company even provided bad service, and refused to refund the money for their lousey product.
The previous to current version of DVD ripper from COSMI is dollar for Dollar just great, and you even get free support !! My First Version of DVD Ripper created excellent VCDs of the Movies I wanted to copy for myself, even though it did take a little time, but hey, it worked !! Very few discs were uncopyable... even the Macrovision discs and a range of copy-protected items were easily copied. The most recent version of DVD Ripper still does the same, except that I tried copying a CSS protected disc to DVD, but it failed. Otherwise it was great. Very few programmes like this exist, for this sort of price, AND have great customer service policies. COSMI is excellent !!!!!!!!!!!!

It works great but slow.It does put it in mpeg format unlike what one reviewer said.Vcd is Mpeg 1 format. The quality isnt as high as mpeg 2 which is dvd.If you have something like the movie shaker you can convert it to mpeg 2 for dvd. Also I have put it on a Dvd - and Dvd-RW and they all play in my home players.I havent tried puting it on svcd format to dvd yet but it will work no problem.Have fun.

Great permormance, but slow.,

It works really well, but it so slow. It takes up to 2-3 hours to rip a 108 minute DVD. But, it goes a lot faster and safer than the DVD rip'n burn, and No. 1 DVD ripper. DVD rip'n burn doesn't rip the whole DVD, and it caused me a lot of mess in my computer. But this one is safe, since it has a preview of what it is gonna be when it is done ripping. You can burn to VCD, which is faster to rip, to SVCD, which takes about 4-6 hours to rip, and DIVX, which I never tried ripping before on that platform. Warning: If you are gonna burn to VCD, or SVCD, look on how many minutes it can hold and how much mb. If you are ripping to a 80 minute CD-R, RW, that is usually 700 mb. If to a 76, 74 minute, it's usually 650 mb, or something like that. Do not put no limit if you are gonna burn to CD-R, RW, that is only for the DIVX. It works really great, if you don't mind waiting it for about 2-4 hours. I'm glad I bought it, some DVD rippers like that works slower, and less safe ripping the whole DVD, that cost around $35-$40. I recommend this to any one whole loves to create backups, and anyone else who has a DVD player and DVDs.
