The book opens with a brief overview of the universe and then describes its major constituents, working from the largest of scales to the smallest, and covering such wonders as comets, stars, and the solar system, as well as shedding light on black holes, quasars and pulsars, extraterrestrial life, and the Big Bang. The theme throughout is the dynamic, cyclical nature of the cosmos. The final chapter summarizes the current state of knowledge about the most fundamental question of all: the future of the Universe. Is the Universe on a one-way street to oblivion or on a circular path to an infinity of rebirths? Will it eventually collapse or will it expand forever?
