The Best Rock Album You've Never Heard Of,
By
This review is from: Cosmic Speed (Audio CD)
The Delphines were made up of lead guitarist/vocalist Kathy Valentine, bassist/ lead vocalist Dominique Davalos and a variety of drummers through their six or so years of existence. To just say this cd is pretty good would be a huge understatement... it's amazing! These ladies put down truckloads of songwriting talent, musicianship, and attitude on each track. Increasingly, "Cosmic Speed" has become harder to find be it here, eBay, or anywhere due to its' being out of print but it is well worth the search! If the prices on those available seem extortionately high, you can always try contacting Kathy Valentine through her website or myspace page. She may be able to hook you up with a copy for a much more reasonable cost.

The Delphines & The Bluebonnets are two manifestations of the songwriting and guitar-slingin genius of Kathy Valentine: Lots of Bluesy/Rock, hard guitars, kick-A vocals....and wicked good songwriting. This one is really hot. REALLY HOT. 'Cosmic Speed' has been out of print for quite awhile, and due to our requests, the download is now available on her website. Go there, get it for less than six dollars. Unless you are a hardcore musthaveatanycost fan, get the download, it's even available in HD. And while your at it, she also has the Bluebonnets' 'Boom Boom Boom Boom' download, and her kickin 'Light Years' solo project. You can have an instant collection for just under eighteen dolars. There you have it. Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Kathy Valentine in any way other than being a fan

For those of you who are not familiar with who this band is, It's Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go's and her bestfriend. 10 years later, I own this album. I sampled every song before ordering what I thought would be an exciting pop/rock album from Go-Go's bass player Kathy Valentine & friends. It seemed as if I was desperately missing out by not owning this album. As withn the Delphines debut, There are only a few select songs that appeal (to me).
I'm guessing the more I listen to it, It will grow on me. Out of 13 tracks I only like 4 tracks from this album. Those are "Cosmic Speed", "Pitiful Pair", "Lowlife" and "Do Not Disturb", And maybe one more but I don't remember the name of it... I think it's "Carboy", Who knows? The main issue I have with this album is that there are barely any noticeable basslines. The sound quality of some of the songs are'nt mastered to perfection. For instance "Pitiful Pair" is a HOT track but the bassline isn't loud, The song is slightly muffled and the sound seems compressed- There's too much treble going on- all I'm hearing are guitars crashing into vocals, there's not enough bass and the sound is not smooth (Details, Details!). The lyrics are cheesy in the verses and the harmonies are good but nothing like what China Forbe's or The Deal sister's could've done with this song. Better yet, Belinda and the girls could've put it down on this song and a few others from the cut, In-short- this album does not seem finalized. You can also tell by looking at the artwork and CD itself that the band obviously had a cheap budget and you can see and hear it. I'm also disgusted that this was the best that a Go-Go's bass player could do, A bass player with no bass in her music... huh???? She's also written "Ordinary Day" for China Forbes which was outstanding and this album is the most she and her new friend could come up with. If You're wondering exactly what this album sounds like, Musically it's a lot like "God Bless The Go-Go's" from the same year. That was a really fun album with good harmonies and background vocals unlike "Cosmic Speed", I enjoyed it. Beware, The songs here aren't as charming as what's on "God Bless The Go-Go's". They really needed more studio time for this album. As for "Cosmic Speed"... It's... |
