In his introduction to this collection of essays, many of which are reprinted from his syndicated column, drive-in movie critic Briggs claims that the essays are not "sensitive," sensitivity apparently being something that only applies to "modern weenie newspaper columnists." Unfortunately, these essays are also disappointing. While Briggs offers some amusing ideas--his sleaze meter along with his way of figuring out who should go to heaven and his Dueling Dimwits nominees--his less happy achievements strain for unorthodoxy but wind up sounding as if they were cut from the same bolt that other columnists regularly tailor. A "consider requests" item.

Joe Bob isn't all that dumb... Wait, ok, maybe he IS kinda dumb - but he's endlessly entertaining, and not half bad as a writer..! This book is a hodge-podge of different stuff as seen through the eyes of Joe Bob -Robert Fulgrhum style - and each chapter is brief, interesting - and perfectly suited for the average bathroom visit, as I'm sure he intended. BUY IT, it's pretty nifty.

Joe Bob (the pen name of John Bloom) writes excellent, thoughtful satire. It's held up well over the years since the book was published. If you run across this title and you're looking for something wickedly laugh out loud funny, a little political and sometimes surprisingly tender or sad, well then... I say, "check it out."
