Opening with an account of the Barwell, U.K. meteorite fall in 1965, British astronomer Davies embarks on a description of the formation of the solar system. The main focus of his narrative is the leftover debris that ended up as the asteroidsin particular, the phenomenon of asteroidal impact with Earth. The theory that the extinction of the dinosaurs might have resulted from such an impact receives extensive coverage. The book concludes with a plausible account of the discovery of a hypothetical asteroid named Damocles on a collision course with Earth and possible efforts to deflect the asteroid. Most of what Davies describes can be found in any astronomy textbook along with a lot more. Suitable for general and YA collections.Thomas E.
