5.0 out of 5 stars Fans of Matsumoto should check this out...
If you're familiar with the shows by Leiji Matsumoto then this is a must see. I've only seen about 1/3 of the series but you get some of the great cameos that I love about Matsumoto's works...Harlock (one of my favorite characters) is a key player in this series so for me, that alone makes it worth checking out. The character development of the other key players is well...

3.0 out of 5 stars We're oooof to outer spaaaace...again!
Spinning off from Star Blazers, Galaxy Express 999, and Captain Harlock, this 13-episode series is set in what's called the "Lejiverse". Leji Matsumoto, who created Queen Emeraldas and Maetel Legend, did this showing what went on with the Earth forces after their war with the Machine Men, as shown in the Galaxy Express 999 movies. Earth has signed a peacy treaty with the Machine Men and is working together with them. But renegade pirate Captain Harlock(also known as Herlock)relentlessly keeps attacking the Machine Men cargo ships. So Earth sends a reformed battleship made of both humans and machines to stop him once and for all. Lead by Captain Zero, this crew tries to get along despite their differences. Zero gathers more allies along the way, and runs into various resident characters like the piano-teethed samurai/engineer Tochiro. Cosmo Warrior Zero is a decent sci-fi series, but mainly for old school anime fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars not what I expected, February 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cosmo Warrior Zero: Collected Edition (DVD)
I was in hopes that this would be worth while watching, but it's pretty bad all around.
Bad acting.(English/Japanese versions.)
Bad animation which reminds me of crappy U.S. cartoons.(no offense intended to Bugs show and friends here)

I bought it because I am a captain Harlock fan. But, he was portrayed very badly.

The character development of the other key players is well done as should be expected from Matsumoto series. There are twists and turns and questions you keep asking yourself as you watch the series, which keep you interested. The main character Zero, is deep and curious as well, and certain members of his crew are worth keeping an eye on.

Since I am a fan of Harlock and Matsumoto, my rating may be a bit biased (or totally biased) but I think this series is accessible enough to be a good intro to Matsumoto's works (although I think Galaxy Express 999 is the best of his works and the best intro). Regardless, I suggest checking out this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars I REALLY DON'T LIKE THE SHIPS., June 9, 2008
This review is from: Cosmo Warrior Zero: Collected Edition (DVD)
I grabbed this box set when I had some extra money and deciced to stimulate the local economy, I,E I spent 3/4 of my paycheck on anime. I'd been meaning to grab this title for some time and finally had a chance. Me, I'm a big fan of matsumoto. Watching starblazers as a kid is what started me watching anime. I have a tendency to prefer series, movies created or inspired by him. The big thing is I love the ships, the ships are what help make his stories great. With this series the SHIPS REALLY STINK. The so-called deathshadow is an embarrassment to the original design. The cruiser karyu is an asymetrical design nightmare, the lead "character vessel" and its downright hideous. The thing that does save the series is the voice acting. Crispin freeman does a wonderful job as the series lead and name of the series. This time he plays a "responsible" captain determined to accomplish his mission. Although I wish they destroyed this ship instead of the soyokaze. Anyway the other main characters are well done and some new characters are just wonderful. I throughly enjoyed the story but the main thing is I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE THE SHIPS. Still if your new to anime and want a good story buy this series. If your an old one like get it for the story and try to overlook the hideous designs.
