5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome
If you have ever played any other strategy franchise (age of empires, civilization, ect.) this one will, without a doubt, take the cake. I used to only play age of empires, but it always seemed to lose my interest because of the small scale battles (skrmishes, really). This game puts no population limit and you can have over a thousand soldiers on the field at once. It's...

2.0 out of 5 stars Cossacks II: Buy Imperial Glory instead!
Having played Imperial Glory, a game about the same historical period, I thought this game fell short. On the up side, the building graphics are beautiful and it is an easy game to start playing and know what you are doing. On the downside, the unit graphics are only fair because of the orientation of the camera. The game play also gets repetitive after a while. I...

I quit playing after about a week. The game also lacks the features of previous Cossacks titles. With no editor, no naval units and a lack of skirmish maps, this game seems to have been rather rushed. If you love the Napoleonic genre, then you may want to give it a go and maybe it's flaws can be overlooked but if you want a classic RTS, with staying power and a long life, like Age of Empires or Rise of Nations, this ain't it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disapointed, January 8, 2007

Was quite disapointed in this game, I can't get it to run. I had contacted the game company support they were very good about getting back to me quite promptly, but it seems there is an issue with this game running on a dual core system. I have the previous game "Napoleonic Wars" and that is fun, and was looking forward to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best History type game EVER!, June 10, 2009

First off let me say, WOW! Because this game has it all, towns, roads(which are used by troops and other units), and forts. This game is not a high quality graphic game, but it really does not need to be. If you want to command up to thousands of troops, and I mean thousands! And love muskets, cannons, and horse troops. Then you will really like this game. I have played Empire: Total War, and let me say, yes that game has some good graphics and units. But this game out does that one by a lot! Placing real historic troops in each faction, Empire: TW does not really do that.

If you want a real history strategy game for PC, then buy this game. Or one of the other Cossack games. It is well worth whatever you pay for it!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Original Was Better, April 26, 2009
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars

I bought Cossacks a long time ago and loved it! This was like the first version so I had trouble finding people to play with online since my version was so old.
Once I got a pair of monitors and a new video card to run them on, the old software wouldn't work with the new hardware. :( So I wanted to upgrade to the newer version so I could play again.
I haven't found a true random may option where I can select a general terrain and number of computer players to play against and build from scratch. All of the options start with some basic setup and a general object to the round. It is hard to get your community ready for an attack if you don't know how to play the game already.
As a result, my kids don't like this game nearly as much as the original version.

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent, March 3, 2009
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cossacks II: Battle for Europe (DVD-ROM)
I own the previous Cossack titles, and compared to this one, I would take them any day. The squad system in use here has been simplified from the last games, but the units in it are useless unless they are part of that squad. The effective range of units has also been nerfed to just a few feet, I can appreciate that this is close to the actual range of smoothbore rifles, but after playing the other cossack titles, I am under impressed. The shooting units in the previous titles have much longer range and I can't believe that gun technology took a step backward. This game loses the depth of the previous titles and comes off as really shallow. The campaign mode leaves also something to be desired and it appears you can only play one campaign per profile, forcing you to create new profiles if you want to re-play that campaign.

The saving grace of this game is the actual action of the infantry battles. Cannons are virtually useless and cavalry seems to be way too fast. I was really looking forward to this game, since there aren't any good RTSs dealing with this era, but was disappointed.

Fun, Great Graphics, lots of play time, AI is good but not great. Overall 4 of 5 stars, AI is 3 of 5. Some minor problems with Cassons loading cannons but not to distracting.

5.0 out of 5 stars realistic, August 10, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cossacks II: Battle for Europe (DVD-ROM)
Cossacks II Battle for Europe is the most realistic game that I've played for it's setting. While playing it, you get a sense of what war was really like at that time. Morale and fatigue are big factors and often determine victory or defeat. The designers of this game did a lot of reaserch on this time period and applied it to the game, and this historical correctness is what I like best about it. I would also like to point out that the graphics are really good, to the point where smoke hangs in the air. This game deserves 5 stars, and the only game I would compare it to is another great game from CDV and Game World, American Conquest.
