Book Description

December 2002
The word "Cossack" conjures up different images to different people. To some, these ruthless riders from the steppes of Asia are the romantic embodiment of dash and daring; to others, they are horsemen from hell - alternately rebels against the Romanovs and vicious instruments of Tsarist repression. As John Ure demonstrates in this lavishly illustrated volume, both images are equally true, and he brings them to life, mining the most dramatic stories from the rich vein of Cossack legend and lore.

1.0 out of 5 stars Author brings a lot of confusion into understanding of cossacks., May 9, 2008
Author is telling a story of Russian cossacks who evolved from Ukrainians that fled into Don region after they were defeated by Russian tsarina Catherin, but he don't bother himself to dig deeper to find a historical truth. His story is heavily biased by Soviet and Russian propaganda that impute ancient Ukrainian history (including Cossack movement) to Russian empire.

If you want to know a real story about where cossacs are coming from, read "Ukraine: A History" by Orest Subtelny, or "A History of Ukraine" by Paul Robert Magocsi instead. You will get much more understanding of these fearless warrior's who were following democratic principles and who managed to stay autonomous for over 300 years.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice picture book with readable prose, June 19, 2010
Fully illustrated, mostly with paintings. It can be used as an introduction or a quick read, but it is not a work of scholarship.
