Author brings a lot of confusion into understanding of cossacks.,
By
This review is from: The Cossacks: An Illustrated History (Hardcover)
Author is telling a story of Russian cossacks who evolved from Ukrainians that fled into Don region after they were defeated by Russian tsarina Catherin, but he don't bother himself to dig deeper to find a historical truth. His story is heavily biased by Soviet and Russian propaganda that impute ancient Ukrainian history (including Cossack movement) to Russian empire.
If you want to know a real story about where cossacs are coming from, read "Ukraine: A History" by Orest Subtelny, or "A History of Ukraine" by Paul Robert Magocsi instead. You will get much more understanding of these fearless warrior's who were following democratic principles and who managed to stay autonomous for over 300 years.

A nice picture book with readable prose,
This review is from: The Cossacks: An Illustrated History (Paperback)
Fully illustrated, mostly with paintings. It can be used as an introduction or a quick read, but it is not a work of scholarship.
