1899. Russian author, considered one of the greatest of all novelists. Tolstoy's major works include War and Peace and Anna Karenina. The novel, The Cossacks, and the three Sevastopol sketches contained in this volume were the direct outcome of Count Tolstoy's own experience. The writer, Turgenieff, called The Cossacks the best novel in Russian, and declared that it gave an incomparable picture of men and things in the Caucasus.
