5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and insightful!
Dr. Drayer gets to the heart of the issues facing the medical profession today with a good dose of humor and warmth. Whether you've worked in the hospital or not, you'll appreciate the honesty and forthrightness the doctor uses in his description of today's medical system. Perhaps most happily of all, Dr. Drayer turns his pen upon himself as well, letting us know...

1.0 out of 5 stars A typical surgeon: everything but surgery is beneath him.
This author's bitter portrayal of everything medical save surgery is a bit irritating. As a current 4th year medical student this book reminded me of most people at the end of their clinical rotations: irritated by everything. His rantings are repetitive, tiring, and uncreative.

Perhaps most happily of all, Dr. Drayer turns his pen upon himself as well, letting us know that no one, not even the author, is above making the occasional mistake so intrinsic to learning this most difficult of professions. Bravo!

This was a very insightful book, with a lot of humor mixed in. I have read several books about the field of medicine, but this was certainly the most interesting and fun to read. I recommend it to everyone, as this affects all of us. Plus, it is very, very funny and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Extraordinary!!!!!, December 21, 1998

This review is from: The Cost-Effective Use of Leeches and Other Musings of a Medical School Survivor (Paperback)
This book does a fabulous job of captivating the true experiances of being a med student in such a brilliant way. When we hear about the glamorized study of medicine, many things are left out. Dr. Drayer does an excellent job of allowing his readers to venture through his medical school journey with him. All the while making sure to add very amusing stories, poems and anecdotes, throughout. The reader can really experiance, first hand, what he went through and learned along the way. This book kept me laughing for days and I suggest it to all, even those (like myself) not working in the medical field.

This is the best book I've read yet dealing with the medical profession. Dr. Drayer is hilarious, and really gets it right on the nose every time. His outlook on medicine is refreshing and easy-to-read. I would recommend this to anyone in med school, the health care field, or in the world in general. A must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cutting-edge and hilarious!, November 4, 1998

This review is from: The Cost-Effective Use of Leeches and Other Musings of a Medical School Survivor (Paperback)
This was the most insightful look at medical school I've yet seen. Dr. Drayer has a wonderfully sharp wit, and gets to the heart of what goes on behind the scenes in a large university medical school with humor and compassion. His ability to point the gun both at the system and himself with such intelligence and good humor is remarkable. I truly recommend this to anyone who's involved in the medical system, or wants to know what goes into making today's doctors who they are. 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ!, January 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Cost-Effective Use of Leeches and Other Musings of a Medical School Survivor (Paperback)
Just as you don't have to be a doctor to love "ER," you'll love Drayer's essays even if you've never been to medical school! Hilarious and insightful, these no-holds-barred accounts of life in the medical trenches give readers a realistic insiders view of medicine that none of the other sappy, ultra-PC, "I was so moved when I saw a baby being born" books do.

Like Woody Allen in scrubs, Drayer takes us on the kind of journey you love to watch, but are thankful that it's HIS experience, and not yours. (Although, med students will definitely recognize these experiences!) A book to check out!

5.0 out of 5 stars not much about leeches in the book, April 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Cost-Effective Use of Leeches and Other Musings of a Medical School Survivor (Paperback)
I bought the book to learn more about leeches, but it was a bunch of stuff about med school and not much about leeches. I was somewhat disappointed although I am thinking about a medical career now.
