5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun
I wanted to see this video as I had heard so much about Costa Rica and didn't know much about the country. The Senor Rico accent was fluctuating, with the American accent trying to get through. After a couple of minutes I started to like the accent, it was so bad it was good, somewhat like an Ed Wood voiceover. A real hoot!

If you're preparing to take your chidren to Costa Rica, and they are under the age of 10, they will likely enjoy this videography. (Notice that most of the people that rave about this video are describing their kids' reactions).

If you're an adult preparing to travel to Costa Rica, A MUCH better overview of the country's geology, politics, economy, immigration, agriculture, ecological convservation, and social history is the the coffee-table book, "Costa Rica : The Last Country the Gods Made."

It's got lotsa scenery, too, in the form of beautiful color pictures! (Of course, there's no little animated man jumping about...).

Skip the cheese factor of Señor Rico. A much better buy for the money, and more solid content are the essays in Adrian Colesberry's and Brass McLean's book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all cost!, May 9, 2003

My wife and I just finished planning our upcoming Costa Rican vacation and hastily ordered this video from Amazon based on the recommendations of the other reviewers. Now that I have watched it, I can honestly say it is one of the worst travel videos I have ever seen. This video has honestly made me *less* excited about my upcoming trip.

First off, Senor Rico uses an obnoxiously fake accent throughout the video to make such poignant observations as "that bird has a big neck". As if his elementary information wasn't bad enough, the "producer" of this...felt obligated to run through every distracting transition effect known to mankind--at a rate of about 1 every 10 seconds! The footage between the transitions was poorly lit, rarely centered or steady, and was generally boring.

Production values aside, there is little to no information about CR in this video that can't be gained from a cursory glance at any of the hundreds of travel websites out there. This video is a disservice to the Costa Rican travel industry and should be avoided at all costs.

The highlight of this production for me was the effort taken to film the flora and fauna, a particular interest of mine. For this feature alone I would gladly have seen a longer video. All throughout, the characters were evidently having so much fun and their enthusiasm for their experience was very infectious. I can't wait to get there and the video certainly helped make up my mind to go. I intend to watch it again a couple of times before I go, to trace the route taken by the travellers on my map. I found this feature also useful for planning my trip.

1.0 out of 5 stars zero stars, March 6, 2004

We are planning a trip to Costa Rica and made the mistake of wasting money on this "stinkburger" video. If I had known what it was, I wouldn't have taken a free copy, much less purchased it. At first we thought the video was a joke, then we thought it was produced by those trying to dicourage travel to the country. Images included vultures picking at a fish carcass (they liked this seen so much they showed it twice), petty thieves, garbage and dilapidated buildings. My wife and I make better home movies than this. Memorable lines are "The sloth climbs down once a week to take a dump." That's right, they say dump. "The vultures are welcome in the city because they help get rid of all the garbage." "That bird has a long neck." and "I wouldn't want to be bitten by that." (after showing a closeup of a spider) We've been to their Web site and still can't figure out if they're a joke or not. The site looks professional and competent. Don't waste your time or money. I hope I can still convince my wife to go to Costa Rica.

I gotta agree with the other reviewer; this is for 4-year-0lds ONLY and adults should peruse the best book I ever found about Costa Rica, and that's the coffee table book, "Costa Rica: the last country the gods made."

Really, Amazon should be embarrassed to be selling this!

The movie was hilarious. The animation was clever and brought some humor to the landscape. I've seen boring documentaries that was no more than a travel guide. This brought some of the scenes to life.

This is an exceptional display of real life footage. It gives you a realistic expectation of what you'll see if you visit Costa Rica. I would skip the travel brochures and go straight to Senor Rico if you want to learn what you can really expect on your trip to Costa Rica. You'll find unbelievable footage full of beautiful beaches, wildlife and many of the fun activities you'll want to include in your vacation plans.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shame on you, Amazon.com!, February 21, 2005
This review is from: Costa Rica Adventures with Señor Rico [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I agree with the poor reviews. This has got to be a joke that was slipped by the Amazon buyers. This is worse than a home movie you are forced to watch in a room of teenagers you don't know, because you PAID for it! I will demand my money back.

This is some guy's home movie with poor picture quality, distracting video editing effects, and minimal content. The only thing funny about it was that I actually spent money on it.
