Grade 3-5-These visually appealing texts are welcome additions. The colorful and diverse photos and illustrations draw readers in and capture the spirit of the countries. Poland offers a little bit of history, but the majority of the book looks at modern life and includes such topics as the importance of Catholicism, Polish food, education, and family life. Costa Rica also includes a short history section that details the landing of Columbus in 1502 and the indigenous population and culture. The rest of the book discusses such subjects as the rain forest, soccer, and life in the city. Useful glossaries and pronunciation guides will help students with unfamiliar foreign words.

Tracey West is the author of more than 200 books for children and young adults, including the Pokémon chapter books and the popular Pixie Tricks series. In 2009 her new series, Hiro's Quest, premiered in Scholastic Book Fairs. She lives in New York's Hudson Valley with her husband, three stepkids, and a variety of small animals.
