This review is from: Costumes of the Greeks and Romans (Dover Fashion and Costumes) (Paperback)
This is one of the best books on the subject. Every costume, theatrical and visual artist will find this book to be an excellent resource of the period. The illustrations are clear, and beautifully rendered.

The book contains a huge variety of classical drawings which teachers and students can use for fun and enlightenment. Any of the illustrations can be copied on reports, projects, tests or quizzes. They can be enlarged too. You can get a great deal of use from this inexpensive treasure.

The language is a bit weird, like that of the 18th or 19th century European travellers. The information is sufficient but is not as academic as one would expect, if you are looking for a scholarly source.
However, the visual part (pictures, figures) is very extensive and helpful.

You have got to love Dover Publishing. They have republished a two hundred year old work by the Anglo/Dutch banker/designer Thomas Hope. As a young man, Hope toured the Continent visiting not only ancient Roman and Greek sites but also many private antiquities collections. He sketched the ancient images of people and the gods. His line sketches remind me of the iconic drawings of scenes from the Iliad produced by his contemporary, John Flaxman. Thomas Hope compliled over 700 these beautifully rendered illustrations and used them in a book published in 1809. I am sure that in the two hundred years since "Ancient Costumes" was published, the study of Greek and Roman costume has made great advances. Nevertheless, Thomas Hope's efforts are the foundation on which the modern study of ancient costumes is based. This a beautiful book published at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

This book has beautiful drawings, however, there are no photos in this book so we can't tell what is the artist's assumtion and what isn't. It's like having something third-hand. Someone made an outfit, an artist drew or painted it, the author drew it, and now I'm trying to interpret what the original garment looked like.
I really loved some of the ideas I got from this book, however, I don't know how accurate it is. |
