Editorial Reviews

About the Artist

Jody Marshall, a native of the Washington, D.C. area, grew up in a musical family. Enchanted by the sound and visual appeal of the hammered dulcimer, she developed a passion for the instrument. She has been performing and teaching dulcimer since 1988 and was a founding member of the popular folk trio, Ironweed. Jody currently performs with MoonFire, an award winning Celtic band that blends the lyricism of traditional melodies with the elegance of chamber music and the creativity of original compositions. Jody has been nominated as best folk instrumentalist by the Washington Area Music Association. Her performance credits include the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Maryland Renaissance Festival, the Kennedy Center, and the White House. As an instructor of the dulcimer, she is known for her clear and insightful style. In addition to private lessons, she teaches frequently at festivals and workshops, including the Augusta Heritage Arts workshops in Elkins, WV; the Upper! Potomac Dulcimer Festival in Shepherdstown, WV, and the Northeast Dulcimer Symposium in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. When she’s not performing or teaching music, Jody works as a freelance writer. Specializing in environmental education materials for children and teachers, Jody writes for Ranger Rick magazine, the National Wildlife Federation’s magazine for children, as well as for various educational projects produced by the World Wildlife Fund

Product Description

You have to hand it to Jody Marshall. She doesn't stand on ceremony with her music. The hammer dulcimer player isn't afraid to expand from the traditional Irish material she does so well into some unexpected, if not unrelated areas. Her own material fits the bill well, especially the title track, and she does a lovely version of O'Carolan's "Mrs. Anne McDermott Rowe." But she veers from that into a John Kirkpatrick tune, a hornpipe, and even to Scotland for a Gow piece. The joy is that everything fits together so well. Her playing is crisp and clear, the arrangements well thought out and highlighting the melodies. She's an excellent musician, not only technically, but in terms of taste, too. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi

Colorful and precise. Brings visions of faraway places, of the renaissance. Jody Marshall's music has a quality I've not heard in a long time. Delightful to listen to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cottage in the Glen, July 23, 2005
This review is from: Cottage in the Glen (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of Moonfire since I heard them perform at the Kennedy Center several years ago and so I was pleased to see that Jody Marshall had recorded an independent CD. "Cottage in the Glen" exceeded my expectations from the opening notes of the first track, the fuguelike "Three Sisters/Little Martha." Marshall gives fresh, lively performances of traditional Celtic tunes like "The Brandy Tree" and "Mrs Anne McDermott Rowe," and has composed original songs such as "Words Unspoken/Labyrinth," whose beautiful melodies stay with you long after the last notes have been played. I highly recommend the CD as an excellent addition to any music collection.
